“Who is the white man?” I asked as soon as we were away from the men.
“Right now, he’s Diamonds & Moore’s CFO, but that won’t go into Kairo’s tenure. Steven wants his son to become the CEO, so he’s been watching Kairo like a hawk. What is weird, though, is Camille being near him. We didn’t even know they knew each other. Rushin Springs is small, but they’re not even in the same generation. Whatever they’re doing, it can’t be good.”
I looked over my shoulder but no longer saw Camille or Steven.
His cologne reached me before he did, and I smiled at him when he was near. Kairo was just a beautiful man. When he entered my personal space, he wrapped a long arm around my waist and brought me closer.
I melted into his broad frame, resting my chin on his chest.
“Pops confirmed that several people are here to watch us. We can stay for like an hour and be out of here. I’m irritated and liable to get disrespectful if someone says the wrong thing to me.”
“Is an hour enough? You don’t have to change how you would normally move for my sake, Kairo.”
“It’ll have to be enough, because we are not a circus act, so people watching us ain’t okay.”
Instead of responding, I wrapped my arms around his waist.
He looked in my eyes, and I smiled and grinned when he returned it, although it looked like it hurt him to do so. I put my arms down, and he turned me to position my body in frontof his and talked over my head to the bartender. Everything felt so erotic, and I couldn’t understand it because it seemed like Kairo’s actions were innocent, but my body wanted him to be bad. Instead of alcohol, I needed some ice water to cool down.
I caught his mother’s eye, and she smirked at me.
“You must be the future Mrs. Moore.” The man I now knew as Steven walked up to us. “I’m Steven, the chief financial officer for Diamonds & Moore. We were worried about Kairo here for a second. He’s kept you under lock and key.”
“No, it wasn’t him. I don’t like our business publicized because of his last name. Only reason I’m here tonight is because the invitation felt like a threat.” I laughed, but I didn’t find a damn thing funny.
Kairo’s fingers dug into my hip, and he pulled me back into him.
Steven gave a dry chuckle and shifted his weight. “No, never a threat. We just wanted to include the future CEO and his bride-to-be in the festivities.”
“Oh, okay.” I didn’t know what else to say.
He was blowing smoke up my ass, but I didn’t care.
As long as he spoke to me and not Kairo, we were good. It was clear he wanted a reaction out of him, and I was proud of Kairo for not giving him one. I also peeped how Mrs. Moore was keeping Mr. Moore away from the conversation. The air became awkward, yet Steven refused to walk away. It made no sense why he was still there when Kairo never acknowledged him.
We were saved from more awkwardness when a woman came to get him.
“That was weird, but I’m glad it’s over.” I huffed.
“I feel like this is only the beginning. I need to keep my eyes on him.” Mr. Moore looked at Kairo. “Get your list lined up so we can take it to the board, and the decision can be made by the next board meeting.”
“I have a few people in mind. I’ll send the email Monday.”
Although it was no secret of Kairo’s wants when it came to me, I was still apprehensive.
Not in theI want to leavekind of way, but more on thethey’ll do whatever it takes to destroy himside. I didn’t like how that felt. It had only been just shy of over a week since we connected, but my feelings of like had grown more.
We finally made it to our table, and it was like as soon as my butt hit the chair, I had to pee.
“I’ll be right back; I have to use the restroom.” Kairo scooted back, and I shook my head. “I’m okay. It’s just the bathroom.” I giggled.
“You sure?” He looked around, and I nodded.
“Positive. Give me five minutes, and if I’m not back, come and get me.”
His left eyebrow rose, and for some reason, the action made me cackle.
I shook my finger at him and kissed his cheek before leaving the table. When I made it to the bathroom, I rushed to relieve myself so I wouldn’t be cornered in the stall. The door opened, and I smirked. I wiped, flushed, fixed my clothes, then left the stall.
