Logan and Henry exchange looks.

“Are you interested? Because it sounds like you are.” Daisy smiles.

“I am. My sabbatical was approved yesterday. It’s for eight months, and I might as well make the money right?”

“It was approved? Why didn’t you tell us?” my brother asks.

“We haven’t really talked yet. What do you think?”

Logan raises a brow. “Mads, you’d be perfect for this.”

I hesitate. “I don’t know anything about being a mascot.”

“You are more or less a cheerleader. You’re charming and funny. The crowd will love you,” Logan adds.

I look at my brother watching me, waiting for my decision.

Not much to think about. My bank account is almost empty, the sublease of my apartment pays peanuts, my sabbatical will last eight months, and it’s best I have something to keep my mind busy.

I nod.

“Fuck it,” I say. “I need a distraction. And money. And what better way to experience Miami?”

Henry squints. “You don’t even like hockey.”

“Exactly. Which means I won’t be emotionally invested in their failure.”

Logan laughs. “That’s the spirit.”

“If you’re serious, I’ll put your name down. Auditions are this afternoon,” Daisy says.

“Do it.”

She grins. “Hope you can handle sweating your ass off in a costume.”

I grin. “How hard can it be?”

The arena is colder than I expected, and I rub my arms, regretting the shorts and tank top combo.

There’s a small line of people waiting to audition, ranging from actual athletes to a guy in a full-on clown suit.

I sigh, adjusting my ponytail.

“Alright,” Daisy says, handing me a form. “Just sign here. Don’t suck.”

“Wow. So much faith,” I mutter, scribbling my name down.

“You’ll be fine, just, you know… try not to fall on your face.”

I stick out my tongue. “I’ll do my best.”

She laughs, then glances over my shoulder.

“Shit. They’re here,” she mutters.

I frown. “Who?”

But then a deep, very familiar voice carries through the rink.
