Journee rolled her eyes because she knew this conversation would take a turn and be about Alivia at some point. Every time the other woman opened her mouth, it was always about herself.

“It put me in a state of mind I didn’t want to be in, and it was hard for me to get out of that. Now he’s coming back around because of all the men in this city; he’s the one you’re dating.”

“Alivia, shut the hell up!” Journee snapped. She got so sick of this shit happening every time Alivia got called out or put in her place about something.

“Journee,” Kaydence began to scold her.

“No, KD. You tolerate too much from her, and more often than not, you’re soft on her because she’s your sister’s best friend.”

It was true. Journee often found Kaydence ignoring things that Alivia did or said, that she had every right to be pissed about because she didn’t want to hear Talia asking her to be nice to Alivia once she ran and tattled.

“So, I’m going to say what you won’t.” Journee turned her attention to Alivia. “Kaydence doesn’t owe you anything. You dated that man damn near ten years ago. Of all the men to date, she chose him because that’s who she wanted.”

Honestly, neither one of them owed Alivia an explanation. But Journee had decided to give her this, at least, for no other reason than to rub it in her face that Axel wanted Kaydence and not her because she’d gotten on her nerves in the short time she’d been there, and Journee could admit it was childish.

“But you have to realize that he chose her too. Axel was well aware of the fact that you and Kaydence knew each other, but he’d moved on from you like you need to do from him.”

“I’ve already said that—”

“You don’t want him,” Journee interrupted, mimicking the irritating grate of Alivia’s voice. “Say it a few more times, and maybe you’ll start to believe it because I sure as hell don’t.”

“First of all, I didn’t even come here to talk to you. So, you can butt out,” Alivia spoke, and Journee gritted her teeth because she was really about to curse this bitch out. “Second, I meant what the fuck I said, but whatever problem you have with me is blinding you to the fact that I’m being honest when I say that.”

It was on the tip of Journee’s tongue to tell Alivia she didn’t believe her because she wasn’t being honest. Not with them and not with herself.

“I could have easily come over here on some bullshit because Kaydence called me a cock sleeve, but—”

“Oh my god! That’s my fucking problem with you,” Journee snapped. “Somehow, everything is always about you. You always find a way to play the victim. Your whole half-assed apology was based on a ‘woe is me’ story where we were supposed to feel sorry for you. For what?” Journee questioned, and she could feel herself becoming angrier by the minute. “Because you couldn’t keep a boy in high school? Get the fuck out of here with that shit.”

Journee was fuming inside, her blood boiling, and she wanted to leave it there. She really did, but the little devil on her shoulder whispered in her ear, close the casket.

“And for the record, you were a cock sleeve in high school. So worried about Axel cheating on you, but weren’t you spreading your legs for an entire fraternity while he was off at basic training?”

Alivia jumped up, and Journee smiled on the inside as she stood as well. She’d been looking for a reason for the last ten years to pop this bitch.

“Enough!” Kaydence snapped, moving between them, and Journee really just wanted her to move. Because if Alivia was feeling froggy, Journee was about to salt that bitch.

“Can you go…somewhere?” Kaydence questioned, turning to Journee, and she opened her mouth to tell her there was no way she was leaving her with this energy-sucking leech, but Kaydence stopped that before it could come out of her mouth. “Now, please.”

Journee flexed her fist and wondered what deity had favored Alivia at that moment. Remembering God protected babies and fools, and Alivia was definitely no baby, Journee turned and headed out of the living room.

Journee leaned up against the wall out of sight. She may have left the room, but she had no shame in eavesdropping. She wanted to be close if she had to go back in there and give Alivia a number three combo.

She listened as the two women exchanged words, and when Alivia asked for an apology, Journee found herself mouthing, you better fucking not. Gaining great satisfaction when Kaydence swiftly denied it.

As they approached the hallway, Journee knew that she could have walked off and made it seem as if she hadn’t been listening, but she had no intentions of doing that. She wanted Alivia to know she’d heard every last bit of their conversation. Mainly because she wanted her to try to get smart with her, and Journee could slap the words back into her mouth.

However, she didn’t say anything and went to the front door. Once she was gone, Journee walked back into the living room with Kaydence deciding not to voice how much Alivia grated her nerves. She was sure neither of them wanted to think about her anymore.

Killian placed the controller down on the table, checking the time. It was going on ten o’clock, and he realized that he hadn’t eaten since earlier in the day. That was a bad habit for him. He was so used to being on the move when working that he tended to eat one substantial meal that would hold him over for a long while. Standing, he stretched before turning his attention to Axel.

“Go put some shoes on. I’m hungry.”

His friend snorted. “You don’t need me to go with you.”

Killian turned towards the hallway, heading in the direction of the door. “Hurry up. I’ll be outside.”
