There was a slight pause before Kaydence answered, “It seemed like an okay idea at the time.” Her tone was in no way believable, and Journee rolled her eyes.
“You don’t even sound like you believe yourself,” Journee responded. “You could have been hurt, KD, or killed. Then I’d have to spend the rest of my life in jail for either killing the assholes that shot you or killing Axel because he’d allowed you to get shot.”
Journee was in no way playing. Had something happened to Kaydence, she may not have been able to find the assholes who did it, but Axel would have to answer to her and Courtney. The two of them together would give that man hell.
“Everything turned out fine,” Kaydence attempted to reassure her.
“This time.” Journee found herself mumbling.
“Well, I don’t plan on making it a habit of being caught in the middle of bank robberies.”
“Yeah, you’d better not,” Journee shot back, and she knew, at this point, she just wanted to scold the other woman for her reckless actions. Journee sighed after several seconds. “I know Courtney probably is about to give you an earful, so I’ll spare you this time.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m really glad you’re okay, KD.”
“I love you too, Journ,” Kaydence responded.
Journee smiled to herself before hanging up the phone. It never ceased to amaze her how the people close to her knew she was saying she loved them without actually saying it.
She leaned back in her seat, not noticing that she’d sat stalk straight at some point. She felt a bit better now that she’d spoken to Kaydence. Any other time, Journee would have lectured her, but she knew Courtney would not let her off easy. Still needing to vent, Journee decided to call Killian when she made it home because she knew Courtney would call her sisters.
«-•-•-•-•-•-•-»
Killian stepped through his front door a quarter till six. It’d been his first day back on duty, and the day had flown by. He wasn’t sure if he’d missed work or if it’d just been busy. Either way, he needed all of his days to go by that quickly.
Walking down the hall to his bedroom, he unbuttoned the top of his fatigues. He’d just removed it and thrown it into his hamper when his phone rang. Killian pulled it from his back pocket, finding it was a video call from Journee. Propping the phone up on his dresser, he answered it.
“Hey, Tigress.”
“Hi.” She seemed to trail off, and Killian lifted a brow. He watched her bite her lower lip before speaking again. “Do me a favor and take a few steps back.”
Killian did as requested, realizing it was her first time seeing him in his uniform. Her eyes raked over him slowly, and anyone who saw her at that moment may have thought he was naked the way she looked at him.
“Turn for me,” she requested, and Killian chuckled but indulged her in her request.
“Should I wear this when you come?” he questioned teasingly.
“While making me cum, yes,” Journee informed, and Killian chuckled again as he sat on his bed, removing his boots. “Anyway, how was your first day back?”
“It went by pretty quickly. How was your meeting with Alijah?”
“It went well. I don’t think any of the places we saw are exactly what she’s looking for, but there were two she seemed to like.”
“Are there other venues close to her that she can see?” Killian inquired, standing.
“Yes, there are. I’m going to…” Journee trailed off as he pulled his shirt off. Killian shook his head; it wasn’t like she hadn’t seen him shirtless before. Hell, she’d seen him naked a few times, but he’d never get tired of her looking at him, so he wouldn’t complain.
“You’re going to?” he asked, prompting her to continue.
“I’m going to set a few more appointments for two weeks from now.” Journee paused for a moment. “Speaking of today, let me tell you what Kaydence did.”
As Killian continued to get undressed, Journee told him about Kaydence’s heroics, and the first thing he thought about was that Axel must have been going out of his mind with worry, not to mention the fact he was the sniper on the scene watching it all play out. While it was good because it meant he wouldn’t let anything happen to Kaydence. It was terrible because shit like that could play havoc on your mind.
He was in his boxers, waiting for the shower to warm up, when Journee sighed as she rolled over, holding her phone above her.
“I can’t even imagine doing something like that,” she spoke. “I also feel bad for Axel because he had to watch it happen and then kill the men in the process.”
