“You called them?”
“Of course. I don’t have a death wish,” Liz said wryly.
Kylie snorted softly, and Sadie licked her face.
“Sorry that took so long.” Geoff slid down. “I fixed a rope to the winch just in case it got too steep. We should be able to do this, though.”
“Let me go put Sadie in your truck, Liz.” That way they didn’t have to worry about the dog.
“Yeah. Sounds good. We’ll get limpy girl loaded up.” Liz smiled for Kylie, but her eyes looked worried.
She got it, but she hoped Kylie’s droopiness was just exhaustion and dehydration. That could happen so fast out here. Brit had to believe they would bandage Kylie up, pump her full of fluids, and send her home.
Worst case was going to be that leg. It might need a little more help. She hoped not surgery, but who knew? It could take some work.
One way or the other, Kylie had her job, so she could take recovery as she needed it. She knew that.
She got Sadie in the truck, then came back down to help strap her girl onto the backboard. Geoff took the top and backed up while she and Liz took the bottom. Kylie was a trouper, barely making a sound, which she knew they all appreciated. No one wanted to think they were hurting anyone, even if they were.
Just as they got to the road, another deputy pulled up, and Geoff looked relieved. “Perfect timing, Rod. You take over the scene. Liz, follow me. I’ll give you a lights and siren lead to the hospital.”
“I’ll be right behind you,” Brittany said. No use leaving Kylie’s Jeep there to get hit.
“Someone call my folks, please.” Kylie’s voice was blown.
“I’m on it,” Liz said. “I’ll let them know where to meet us, because you know they’ll want to drive over.”
“I’m right behind you, babe,” Brittany said, and it damn near killed her to get in a different vehicle.
She missed Sadie, too. This was just…
What did that bastard think he was doing? Fucking with all of them?
Brittany set her jaw, though, and pulled out after Liz and Geoff to get Kylie to the hospital. Hopefully by the time they got out, Josh would have gotten himself arrested.
Fucker.
Twenty-Four
Kylie woke up in the hospital, her whole body one big ache, and when she blinked her eyes open, her mom was there. Well, her mom and dad, not Liz. Wild.
“Am I on my deathbed?” she teased.
“Hardly. How are you feeling, baby?” Mom was right there, expression concerned. “You’ve had surgery on your leg.”
“Shit.” She rolled her eyes. “Sorry. What all did they do?” She could see now it was all wrapped up and elevated, but not in traction. So that was better than it could have been.
“A couple of pins. Nothing earth-shattering. You just need to take care of yourself for a few weeks.”
“Yikes.” Pins. That was serious shit. “I guess I’m office bound, huh?”
Her mom chuckled. “That’s what Liz says.”
“Where’s Brit?”
“She took Sadie home to feed her and make sure the guest room was ready for us. Then we’ll swap.” Mom nodded, lips pursing. “I like her a lot. She’s fierce.”
“Did they get Josh yet?”
