“Okay. I’ll take some fingerprints. If you see anything else, let me know. You might have someone sit out here to keep watch tomorrow.”
“Yeah. If no one else can, I will, but I bet we can get Milo to do it since he’s not up on the trails with Evie.”
“Good deal. If you need me again, call. Here’s my cell.” He handed her a card. “Faster than dispatch.”
“Thanks, Geoff.” She clapped him on the shoulder. Summit Springs did have a municipal force, but M&M were mostly on the outside of the town limits, so the county handled their calls.
She dealt with everyone—and she owed the guys from the garage lunch, because they were pros who got everyone back on the road. Then she texted Liz.
Someone would take that. Hell, Joe would do it.
By the time the guests all left, she had a pack of worried guides in the shed, looking to her to tell them what to do.
“Okay, so someone’s got his knickers in a twist. We need someone or someones willing to sit guard. Liz says she’ll pay double time. This guy’s a coward. We make sure the parking lot is watched so long as there are cars here until they get back, deal?”
“Sure. We can all move our cars closer to the bunks, too,” Jilly said. “Make it easier at night. I can take like, nine to midnight.”
They set up a schedule quickly, and Kylie agreed to come in early and take the last shift.
“I’ll be with her,” Brittany said.
“And I’ll bring the dog in with me from now on.” That would be noisy if someone was around who wasn’t supposed to be. She knew Sadie wouldn’t bark at clients, but someone sneaking around? That dog had radar.
“Yeah. You don’t think he’s dangerous, do you?”
Fuck. Did she? If she did, should she say so?
“No. I think he’s a coward who has a bone to pick with Liz and Lupe somehow and is taking it out on innocent tourists. You guys are far too physical and capable for him to confront.” That was Geoff’s assessment, right? If the cop wasn’t worried, she would put it out there that way.
“Fucker. He’d better not mess with us. This is our home.” Joe’s words were a deep rumble. “I’ll stick close in case they need me. Fair?”
She nodded. “Works for me. Thanks, guys. Call me if anything comes up, not Liz. And I have gift cards for Cherry’s. Order some pizzas for everyone. You were all great today.” Kylie held out her hand to Brittany. “Ready to head home?”
“Yeah. Yeah, come on.” Brit took her hand, holding on tight, almost grounding her.
Thank God. She was rattled. Big time. If that was what the intention was, it had worked.
“So today sucked…”
“Yeah, no shit on that,” she answered. “What the hell?”
“Yeah. You did great, though. I mean, you were on it.”
She squeezed Brittany’s hand. “Yeah? You think so?”
“I know so. You rocked it. For real.” Brit slipped into her Jeep, then stole a quick, soft kiss.
“Mmm.” She licked her lips, the flavor of Brittany bolstering her. “Shit, what a day for some asshole to go off the rails.”
“Well, you were in your managerial glory. I can’t see Joe or any of the others doing that well.”
She got them moving, then glanced sideways at Brittany. “There’s a reason Liz chose me, and it’s not just my seniority.” She needed to get this off her chest, and she and Brittany were a we now, right? So who else, besides Joe, who she’d talked to, was she gonna tell?
