Easier said than done, but they were undoubtedly right. She needed to let Brittany have her space, let her decide what this was and what it wasn’t. Kylie wanted more, but it wasn’t only her decision. So she could give a little.
And she would be back on the river in no time. That would give her first dibs on taking Brittany swimming.
Twelve
Brittany woke up feeling like crap.
She’d had too much to drink, spent too much time in the hippie pools, and she’d snuck back into the dorm to go to sleep. Which she hadn’t wanted to do and now she was mad as hell at herself that she hadn’t called Kylie and asked if she could come over.
That would have felt sleazy too, since she hadn’t gone to meet Kylie’s friends.
She rolled out of bed and turned on the desk lamp before she checked to see if Jilly was there. She was, and a shoe came flying at her.
“My head! Turn it off!”
“Sorry, Jill.” She turned off the lamp and grabbed her robe and shower kit. “Back in a bit. I’ll need the light then to get dressed.”
“Mmpph.”
Man, Kylie was totally better to live with than Jilly.
She checked her phone on the way to the shower, kinda disappointed that there were no texts from Kylie. But she didn’t have any rafting clients today, so maybe…
Maybe it was her turn to text. she tapped in, sending before she could talk herself out of it.
That came back with gratifying speed. She grinned.
She snorted. Oh, she was in trouble. She’d better bring something amazing for both Sadie and Kylie.
And didn’t that sound like a relationship kind of thing to do?
She hopped in the shower, got dressed, and then headed to the coffee shop to grab some of the amazing pastry they carried.
Then she headed out to the condo, humming along with the radio.
She breezed into Kylie’s ten minutes later, box of pastries in hand along with a bag of burritos. “Hey, babe. You here?”
“Out on the patio!” Kylie called.
“Dining al fresco. I like it.” She avoided Sadie, who tried to jump up to sniff the food. “Hey, girl. No tripping me.” Sadie ran ahead, leaving her then, so she could walk.
“Hey.” Kylie grinned at her from where she sat at the little patio table, Sadie at her feet, tail thumping. Two cups sat there, along with a carafe she hoped was coffee, though she’d brought a couple of almond milk lattes to start with.
“Hey.” She bent to take a kiss. “Sorry about last night. By the time you texted, Jilly had poked me into going with her.”
“No problem.” Kylie held her there for a moment, taking the kiss deeper the second time. “I missed you, though. You can come out to sleep here anytime.”
“I can?” That was cool. “I didn’t want to assume it was okay without asking.”
“Well, it officially is.” Kylie chuckled. “I admit, I was feeling a little sulky last night, and my friends reminded me that I needed to give you a chance and not act like the end of summer was already here.”
“Nice. Now I need to meet them for sure.” She settled in across from Kylie. “How did the foot appointment go?”
“I’ll be cleared for light duty next week.”
