“You know it.”

There was a wave of laughter, but she was surprised to find it wasn’t mean. Jilly gave her a fist bump, even. She would just have to make sure she didn’t slack today. Some people came late to being a little resentful and might turn her in for tiny things.

She didn’t need that, but if it happened, well, Brit thought it was worth it. Kylie had rocked her world. Like… Her cheeks heated as she thought about all the things they’d gotten up to.

So she would deal.

“All right, people, we have a full schedule today.” Joe finished calling out assignments, and they all began their daily routines, checking rafts for inflation and damage, loading the bus with water and supplies, making sure the dry bags were packed.

“So…” Jilly nudged her with one elbow. “Was it good?”

“I don’t kiss and tell, J.”

“Not even a little?” Jilly pouted. “I need to live vicariously.”

“Nope.” She winked, though. “It was good enough to tell her I would work with Joe all summer so I could keep doing it.”

Jilly sighed and smacked her lips dramatically. “Yummy.”

“It so was.” That was all she was going to say before she zipped her lips.

“So jealous.” Jilly winked at her, then got back to work, and that seemed to be that. She hoped it was that easy; she really did.

Brittany liked a few things in her life to be less tricky than a class four rapid, after all.

About an hour later they were set up for the first guests, and Brittany grabbed a clipboard and a vest, ready to play rafting guide.

“Ah, Brittany, there you are.” Liz kinda stepped out in front of her when she was on her way back from the bathroom, stopping her in her tracks.

“Morning, Liz.” She offered a smile, hoping this was a good visit from the boss.

“Morning. I just wanted to check in with you and make sure everything was good.”

“So far, yep.” She was going to step carefully here and not volunteer any information.

“No more problems with Joshua?”

For a moment, she couldn’t even think who Joshua was. Then she remembered the guy who’d bailed on her in training and had screamed at her about sabotaging him.

“Nope. I haven’t seen him. I’m hoping he’s just moved on.”

Liz nodded, studying her hard. “Me too. Nothing else?”

Brittany took the bull by the horns. “Am I not allowed to fraternize with another employee?”

“I usually stay out of that stuff, but I have a soft spot for Kylie, and she’s been with me a while. I just want to make sure if it goes south, you can cope.”

“I can. We’re having a good time is all.”

“Good deal.” Liz’s beaky face broke into a wide grin. “Nothing wrong with some summer fun.”

“Not one thing.” She grinned back, relieved. “I’ll try to be good to her.”

“And she’ll try to be good to you or I’ll kick her ass. I may be fond, but she gets held to the same rules.”

“Of course.” She forced herself not to babble. “I appreciate that, and it’s more than fair.”

“Keep up the good work.” Liz headed off, leaving her breathing a sigh of relief.
