There’s more than one way to die
For my existence
You are unforgiven
“Jun?” Damian’s voice came from the direction of the hall.
He lifted his head. The door was cracked.
“Don’t come in!”
There was a touch of stress to Damian’s tone. “I’m not looking. You were gone.”
Jun scrambled to his feet. “Here, close your eyes.” He opened the door and put his hand up over Damian’s face. “I’m okay.”
Damian’s hand was balled up in a fist. Jun took his wrist. “Just keep your eyes closed and sit down, then you can open them.”
He pulled Damian inside and drew him over to the crate, then turned Damian so his back was to the construction.
Damian lowered himself down to the floor. Jun sat back down beside him. Jun squeezed Damian’s fist. “You can open your eyes. Just don’t look behind us, all right?”
“All right.” Damian opened his eyes, blinking a few times. His eyes were so dark, the pupils blown wide, making black pools in his face, leaving almost no brown behind.
“Bad dream?” Jun leaned in, pushing their shoulders together.
Damian nodded. He squeezed Jun’s hand back. “And then you were gone.”
“I had nightmares earlier. So I decided to just come out here. Do something with it.”
He handed Damian his notebook with the words he had just written.
Damian’s eyes traveled over them, once, twice, and then a third time. “It’s good.”
“Not polished.”
“Some things don’t need to be.” Damian let out a long breath. There was a sheen of sweat on his skin. Jun stood up and found them some blankets inside a closed box. He came back and tucked them in around both of them.
“Tomorrow is going to suck.”
Damian gave a dry laugh. “Tomorrow is already here.”
“Nope, still ignoring it.”
Damian shook his head. He stroked Jun’s face. “He was killing you again. You were calling for me. And I couldn’t reach you.”
Jun squished himself into Damian’s side. “I’m here.”
“Sometimes I want to take you away from everything, hide in the woods, change our names, just to make sure no one takes you away.”
“That would work for a week.”
“I know. It would kill you. I keep telling myself that I’ll never be another cage.”
“Maybe a little bit of a cage, just enough of one so I know you want me.”
Damian gripped Jun’s hand. “This much.”
Jun squeezed back. “Remember, I don’t go down easy. If your father came for me, he’d have to try.”
