Damian grinned down at his screen.
Jun sent a thinking-face emoji, then a laughing face.
Jun’s dots bounced, hesitated, then bounced again.
Damian:
Jun:
Jun’s nerves rang through the two-letter text. Damian shook himself and looked up at Gigi. “I’m sorry about your friend, but I need to get to Jun.”
Gigi’s nose wrinkled up. “Not sure if I want to call her a friend anymore. Jun, on the other hand? I’m coming with you.” She started picking up her things.
His phone buzzed. He looked down.
Unknown number:
He shook his head. More of Dalia’s shit. He texted back.
A return message didn’t come through until he and Gigi were almost at the train station. He ignored it until they were through the turnstile and on the platform. Then he opened his messages.
Unknown number:
Damian pinched the bridge of nose and let his air out slowly:
Unknown number:
Damian’s eyes burned as he looked down at the words.
Don’t engage. Don’t engage. Don’t engage. He closed his eyes.
He blocked the sender and shoved his phone back into his pocket.
“That looked rough,” Gigi muttered.
Damian grimaced. “Thank goodness we can choose our friends.”
“Fuck yeah.”
The train rolled into the station, pushing the air back and dropping the temperature by at least five degrees. Gigi shivered and headed to the closest door. “Let’s get inside. I think it’s going to snow.”
Damian looked up at the dark sky. It certainly seemed that way.
Jun
The hotel lobby was served by a café and bar. Jun glanced across the space, cataloging faces. There was a plethora of nooks created by plants and built-in screens for private meetings. One could sit to be seen or sit to blend in.
Mi Hi fisted her purse. “I’ll grab us drinks. Grab us a nook? Do you drink coffee? They probably have it here, even though it’s late, since it’s a hotel or…”
“Coffee, please, black like my soul, no sugar. Dark roast.”
Mi Hi laughed. “Let me guess, you hate Nescafé.”
Jun scowled. “That is not coffee. That is a lie wrapped in plastic wrapped in?—”-
Mi Hi held up her hand, laughing. “I get it, I get it. Real coffee. Take my coat.”
