The chieftain glowered at the Librarian.

“Why is there no magic?” the chieftain demanded.

The Librarian looked troubled. “I don’t know, something is wrong, something is very, very wrong.”

“Very,” Tan echoed.

“Well, what shall we do?” the chieftain said.

“I’ll send a message—”

“How?”

“I don’t know,” the Librarian confessed.

Tan stood up. He didn’t know what was going on, but if the chieftain didn’t have magic and the Librarian didn’t have magic then what was to stop Tan from doing whatever he wanted. He could sneak off—heck he didn’t even have to sneak, they couldn’t stop him.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

Vir looked at the Librarian and the chieftain. They were shaking their hands and their heads, muttering spells under their breath.

“Are they okay?” Vir asked, confused.

“I’m not sure.”

“What are you doing?”

“What’s going on?”

“I thought we were going to arrest the chieftain?”

“Arrest the Librarian,” the chieftain cried out. “He tried to cast a binding spell on me.”

Tan noted that the chieftain didn’t mention why it didn’t work.

“And not just him,” the chieftain continued. “All of them. His assistant, and him and the orc,” he concluded, pointing to Vir and Tan.

“I will speak,” the Librarian said.

“No speaking, arrest him,” the chieftain said.

The soldiers exchanged glances.

“Do as I say!”

“I will speak,” the Librarian repeated.

One of the soldiers stepped forward.
