It wouldn't be mine, I knew that, but it was such a nice dream to see that even when he didn't choose me, I could still be part of their offspring's lives. Both the kids ran around, and then tried to climb up my leg, begging to be picked up. I laughed and hefted the boy up on one hip with one arm, and the girl with the other. They squirmed and tried to push each other off of me, claiming that I was theirs alone, and I laughed some more before I told them both if they didn't stop squirming, I'd have to put them down.
I snorted, and sucked in breath that woke me. When my eyes opened again, limbs were sprawled out everywhere. I was drooling on Trent's chest, with a leg flung across his stomach, and my hand was gripping his horn. Even in my sleep I feared he'd leave and had to cling to him. Groaning, I stretched and slowly extracted myself, but he pulled me back and smiled into my hair, sniffing deeply.
"My kansa, your dreams are beautiful," he said with a sleepy yawn.
I blinked up at him. "Uh, thanks?" He couldn't have seen my dreams, so I'm assuming he just believed I had a good dream since I was so relaxed, all my saliva ended up on his chest.
"I will speak with your elder about preserving your eggs for our kantos," he said, then kissed my forehead.
Kantos was what he called larva sacks... for offspring. Had he seen my dream? No, I assure myself, because if he had, then he'd know that both the offspring were not mine, but I would treat any of Luan's spawn as my own. And since one looked just like him... it was obvious that I believed he'd still choose her to be his first mate, while I would be the mate on the side that couldn't give him that future.
I had to stop daydreaming, my reality was set, and I had to accept it.
"Right, well, Elder Ezra will be wondering why I've been avoiding her for the last few days," I changed the subject. "I should get going."
"Together," he reminded me.
"You don't need to," I tried to give him an out, and he frowned.
"Mate," he growled. "Are you playing hard to get? I'm all for a bit of games when we finish our Kloaph Rites on Kai Mountain, but until then, I do not like feeling the ebb of our bond straining when you push away from me. It's like an emptiness fills my soul, and a vacuum consumes the space of my mind that belongs to you. I will wait for you to trust me, but I will not leave your side until our bond is accepted," he said with a determined resolve that I didn't think even a hergslat could smash.
His brows furrowed and he asked, "Why are you imagining those beastly rodents with heads harder than steel, and claws that cut through stone?"
"Hergslats..." I watched him curiously, and my mouth fell open. "How are you seeing my thoughts?"
He grinned and leaned over in bed to kiss me again. I melted into the kiss and moaned. What was this hold he had on me? Trent pulled away, and he turned to swing his legs from the bed, the covers sliding off of him to reveal he hadn't worn a shred of clothing. I blushed, and glanced away, but not before getting a clear picture of his cock hardened, and at attention.
He was gorgeous, and I didn't know how I had the willpower to resist riding him the other day. I turned an even deeper shade of green thinking about his fingers so deep inside of me, and I squirmed, thankful that he was facing the other direction now.
"I thought you would have figured that out by now," he said with a husky tone, almost as if he knew what I was thinking about. According to him... he did, and it was becoming unsettling how accurate he was in guessing. Then a voice echoed in my head, "You are my mate, and if you need me to take care of you again before we leave, I will always be thirsty for you."
It was all in my mind, I thought. He can't read minds... that would be crazy.
"Mabel," his tone dark was filled with promises, "I can feel your need, and if you don't get a hold of yourself, I will dismiss traditions and fuck you where you are."
I shivered and contemplated teasing him to make him follow through with his word, but I didn't think either of us would stop at foreplay this time, and I couldn't risk what would happen if I found out my eggs were fertilized with the scanners.
"Right," I said while slapping my face to distract myself from how hot he was standing there with so much confidence, and a cock thicker than his fingers combined. My goddess... I would take it all, but I didn't know if I could accommodate more than what we'd already done. I blushed profusely, and his wings burst out, the buzz of warning about him that he would fuck me if I didn't get a hold of myself. Scrambling to my feet, I turned so I didn't see him. "Put some clothes on!"
He laughed, and I heard the hum of his wings fade as he walked to pick up his pants. My own wings folded back, and I stepped into my robes while peeking over at his sculpted ass. What was wrong with me? Yesterday wasn't our future, I knew that. I wouldn't let him throw away the chance at building peace with Estreldez. Could I keep my feelings locked away so Luan could lead our clan and the hive? I had to.
"I know this day will not be easy, but I'm not going anywhere," Trent said, sensing my unease. He didn't realize how deep that unsettling feeling went. It wasn't just about losing my eggs, it was about losing him.
When the door slid open on Trent's room, Gaven stood in the hallway, his face devoid of any sign of what he was thinking.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, and there was a tick in his jaw before the blank stare returned.
"Trent, your services, are no longer required. Elder Ezra is expecting us."
"You spoke with her?" I narrowed my eyes and didn't know why I felt so defensive about that. Was I having second thoughts about what needed to be done?
Gaven stayed very still, if I didn't know better I'd say he was a garden decoration. But we weren't in the garden, and there were much more attractive things to look at than the hard lines of his stern face. "She needed to know that you were risking your life for a male that will not stay on Estreldez, and will not choose you when he is required to mate for the sake of the clan, for the sake of his hive."
Fingers dug into the palms of my hands as I fisted them at my sides. Before I could say anything, Trent dismissed the accusations, "There is more than one way to save our planets. Mabel is my queen, and I will have her discuss a new treaty needed for the coming threats to our sector after she has recovered."
Thunderous bootsteps marched in time through the halls, and it seemed much too rhythmic to be the milling about of our off-worlder guests preparing for the final day of the ceremony.
"What's going on?" I asked Gaven.
