“Now, I understand you just found out you were pregnant yesterday, after you had a dizzy spell and passed out at work?”

“Well…pretty much.” I nod. “I kind of suspected before but I wasn’t sure,” I add.

“Dizziness isn’t uncommon with Were pregnancies,” she says.

“Excuse me,” I interrupt her. “But you keep saying ‘where.’ Where, what? I’m sorry, I’m confused.”

Dr. Elizabeth frowns. Then she does the oddest thing—she leans over and sniffs me. I don’t mean under the sheet—that would be awful. I’m talking near my neck—she inhales and then her frown deepens as she looks at Logan.

“Your wife is at least half Were, isn’t she? That’s what her scent tells me, anyway.”

“Yes, but I believe she was raised in the human world,” he replies.

The human world? What are they talking about? I look back and forth between them. It’s like they both know some secret language or they’re members of the same secret club and I’m excluded.

“What are you two talking about?” I asked. “Of course I was raised in the ‘human world’—we all were. We’re all human!”

Dr. Elizabeth and Logan exchange another look and she takes out the wand.

“You can sit up—I think we’re done here for today,” she says and goes over to flip on the lights. “Go ahead and get dressed. The front desk will give you a list of approved foods and I’m going to want to schedule a follow up appointment soon.” She consults a calendar on the wall. “Hmm…how about Monday of next week? There’s a full moon this weekend—that should give you time to explain,” she adds, speaking to Logan.

Now I’m thoroughly confused. Why are we scheduling my next doctor’s appointment around the full moon? What does that have to do with anything?

“I don’t understand,” I say, shaking my head.

“Your husband will explain.” Dr. Elizabeth offers me a bright smile. “I’ll see you soon for more tests and another consultation but for now, congratulations—your baby seems to be healthy.”

Then she leaves.

I go behind the screen and use the sheet to clean the ultrasound gel off me and out of me, but I’m full of questions. When I get dressed and come back around to see him, Logan has an unreadable look on his face.

“Logan—” I begin but he shakes his head.

“Later, okay? I promise we’ll talk about it later.”

I guess I have to be contented with that. We stop by the front desk of the clinic and get a list of foods the “pup”—there’s that weird term again—needs. I scan it quickly and see lots of red meat and other sources of protein are highly recommended. They also give me a bottle of prenatal vitamins to take and schedule me again for Monday.

Logan takes my hand.

“Come on, sweetheart—time to go home.”

I let him lead me to his truck and help me inside—it’s high up and difficult to get into but he boosts me up with ease. We ride most of the way home in silence and I’m trying to think of how to broach the subject when Logan surprises me by speaking first.

“How much did Dirk tell you about what he is?” he asks, cutting his eyes towards me.

“What he is?” I ask, confused. “If he’d told me he was a grifter, we never would have gotten married!”

“No, I mean biologically,” he emphasizes.

I shake my head.

“What do you mean? He’s just a guy.”

“No, he’s not and neither am I.” Logan’s voice is grim, as though he’s bracing for me to be upset. “Neither are you, for that matter. You’re at least half Were—your scent is clear about that.”
