David doesn’t move, so I do, coming closer to him than is probably wise. He’s so stiff I think I’ve made a mistake, but then he sighs, his body melting against mine.

“No, I’m sorry, Connor. I’m just so worried about him.”

I wrap an arm across his chest. “Me too,mo mhuirnin. Me too.”

“We should have gone after him.”

I hug him tighter. “We did, David. He can move faster than either of us and if he doesn’t want to be found, we won’t find him.”

He mumbles something, and at my “What?” he rubs his cheek on my shoulder.

“You get to call Sheena this time. I had to call her the time he got shot.”

I nuzzle his hair, enjoying the light perfume of his product. “Might be worth asking her where he’d go to hide out.”

His laugh vibrates against my chest. “Yeah, and after we recover from the beatdown she gives us, we can go looking for him.”

We untangle from each other, and I go for my phone. “Text or phone call?”

“You may as well call her. If you text‘Trajan is missing—where should we look?’she’ll call you to chew you out.”

“Right.” I check the time. Two a.m. If she had a bodyguarding gig, she’s probably home already, and if she was at The Club, they’re shutting down. I gather my cojones and swipe the screen.

“What?”

Sheena answers so abruptly I almost drop the phone. “Everything okay?”

“No. Everything’s not okay. You’re calling me in the middle of the damned night, which means you either found another body somewhere or Trajan’s been injured in some way. Now talk.”

She must be at The Club. She’s got her Domme voice on, and she’s loud, as if she’s been talking over a disco beat. David rolls his eyes from his perch on the bed. He must hear her too.

“Trajan left. Where would he go?”

“Left? What do you mean?”

I massage the muscles in my neck. “Over the last week or so, Jacques has been putting the screws to him. Like, Jacques showed up at one of the VRBOs where we were staying, or at least his spirit did. Things got worse tonight and Trajan took off, saying he…” I tried to remember Trajan’s exact words. “He said it was too dangerous for him to be around us.”

“And you let him go?” Her voice is flat, menacing, and all of a sudden, I’m out of patience.

“Save it, princess,” I snap. “I’m not the enemy. If you have any idea where Trajan might hide out for a couple weeks, let me know. Otherwise, I’ll see you when I see you.”

“If you’d stayed dead the first time, Trajan wouldn’t be having this problem, would he?”

My jaw’s so tight I can hear my teeth grind. “If you think of anything helpful, let me know.”

“Not until I hear from Trajan myself.”

The phone goes dead and I drop it on the bed, my hand limp. David’s covering his face with his hands, which I take to mean he thinks I’m out of line.Whatever. “Do you need me to recap that?”

David’s laugh is muffled. “Um, no. No, I heard it just fine the first time.”

I sit on the foot of the bed, my elbows on my knees. After a while, David starts talking. “So next time we have to call Sheena, I’ll do it, m’kay?”

I let loose a snort. “Sure.”

“I mean, calling her names might not have been your smartest move.”

“Look, Sheena wasn’t my biggest fan the first time around. I guess tonight I just wasn’t in the mood for her attitude.”
