I nuzzle behind his ear, distracted by the herbal scent of the product he’d used. “Sounds like you’re splitting hairs to me.”

“I don’t know. If I’d only searched the newspaper archives for an incident that would fit, I’d have missed all the people we ended up talking to, the ones who pointed us in the right direction.”

“But you did talk to those people, and I think we are moving in the right direction.”

“Yeah, but what if I’m jumping to conclusions again? What if the snake was there because Donna’s protecting her friends?”

“Protecting them from who?”

“I don’t know!” He sits up fast, swinging his legs to the floor and standing over me. “I don’t know the answer, but I don’t want to miss anything by asking the wrong questions.”

He heads for the stairs, giving me a glimpse of his cute little ass on the way by. I settle against the leather upholstery and return to pondering the view. David’s taking this investigation thing seriously, and as much as I’d like to sign over my business stuff to him, I have to respect the effort he’s putting into helping Connor.
