He crawls closer, slow and sinuous, then positions himself with his ass right in front of me. “Drama queen,” he mutters.

I should swat him again, but his musky scent is making my mouth water. I reach for the nightstand and grab some lube - Jacques keeps his houses ready – then slide a slick finger into his hole.

His breath hitches when I add a second finger. I’m so hard, I might lose control if he bumps against me. Slicking myself with lube is a lesson in self-control, and pushing into his heat severely tests my restraint. He’s clutching fistfuls of the linen sheets, and even better, he’s loud, erupting in gibberish that includes the liberal use of the word fuck.

If he can let go, then so can I, and I whale on him, determined to fuck him so hard, he’ll remember me for a long while.

My balls tighten to the point of implosion. I reach around and grab his cock. It takes only a couple more thrusts and he’s screaming and thrashing, hot cum pouring over the back of my hand. A nice guy would back off, give him some time to come down, but I go harder, drilling him till my own release sears me. I’m drowning in white light and pleasure, but I keep myself standing upright so I don’t bite anything on accident.

One taste of werewolf blood and the stuff in the plastic bag is likely to make me puke.

“You held out on me, sweetness.” David’s voice is languid, relaxed. I can hear his smile, though his face is still pressed into the bed.

I slowly withdraw, savoring the borrowed heat suffusing my muscles. “Sweetness? Try again.”

He flops over onto his side. “Trajan’s just so…so…”

“What?” I ease myself down next to him on the bed.

“I don’t know.” He curls himself around me. I stiffen. Never been one for cuddling.

He giggles and folds himself tighter. “Badass vampire.”

I lie still for a moment, fighting the urge to force some space between us. Slowly, like a chunk of ice melting in the sun, my body relaxes. We’re not snuggling, but I no longer want to bounce him out of the bed. “Let’s get some rest. We’re safe enough here, and tomorrow after sunset, we’ll move again. Sheena will stay with you during the day.”

“You told her where we are?”

It was a calculated risk. “If someone starts shooting, we’ll know it’s her.”

“Nice way to set up a friend, Tone.” His laughter is tinged with bitterness.

I stiffen. Our moment of sharing is over. “Good night, David.”

Chapter Five

AN HOUR AFTER sunset, a chindi trots up to the living room window. I’malreadyannoyed because I woke up to a plumbing issue at one of my apartment buildings, and hunger has clawed through all my patience. I need to get to thefew packets left from my last blood bank order. They’ll be stale as shit, butI’m too hungry to be picky. We’re leaving for my condo as soon asSheena and Davidget back from shopping, andI do not have time for a coyote who’s been possessed by an evil ghost.

Sharp claws tap on my window. I ignore the sound, but it won’t give up.Tap tap tap tap tap.

I jerk the sliding door open. The coyote squats on his haunches, grinning at me, sending chills along my spine. If a chindi found me, then whoever sent it could, too.

“What?”I’d break the creature’s neck, but don’t want to chance the ghost jumping into me.

“Got a riddle for you.” The chindi speaks in the harsh voice of an animal.

“Who sent you?”

“A friend, so listen.” It barks, as if clearing its throat. “They’re dark and always on the run. Without the sun, there would be none. What are they?”

“No fair, fleabag. I haven’t seen the sun in a hundred years.”Still, I memorize the words. A ghost doesn’t just show up to tease.

“Get over yourself.” The creature hopsonto all fours.

I swallow some of my frustration. Don’t want to chase the thing away before learning anything useful. “Sorry.”

“Sure you are.” It huffs, pausing to scratch at an ear. “Here’s the deal. There’s a lot more going on than you know, Gall. Make like the answer to my riddle.”

Make like the answer…? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”Something that’s dark in the sun?“You mean a shadow?”
