“That’s an insult and you know it,” Marcello says dangerously low.

Angelo and Luciano guns drawn at one another.

I sigh.

I hate this life.

“Then no deal.”

My father stands abruptly. “Lets go.”

I follow my father out of the room.

My head swirling, my heart pounding, Luciano passes by me swiftly, catching up to our father.

They round the corner toward the elevator, leaving me behind as I try to will the shaking in my body to stop. A warm hand grips my shoulder—and I know it’s him by his scent. It makes my heart clench. He turns me and his eyes hold none of the desire or kindness from this morning.

“Did you get whatever intel you needed?” he demands.

“What? I-”

“Save it,” he scoffs.

“You were good.” He shakes his head. “I didn’t suspect a thing.”

“I didn’t do anything, I didn’t—”

“Did Luciano have a good laugh?” he chuckles darkly.

“That son of a bitch always did find ways to get under my skin,” he shakes his head again and begins to pace, “but sendingyou?” he runs his hands through his hair. “That was evil, he lives up to his name.”

“He didn’t,” I try to say as tears well up in my eyes. Angelo grabs my face between his hands, his face inches from mine.

The hallway blurs behind him; just the two of us, alone in a moment that feels carved from glass and fire.

“Don’t,” he warns his chest rising and falling rapidly.

“You—” his gaze flicks to my lips before meeting my eyes again ”—you were a mistake.”

I gasp because that’s all I can do as my heart shatters in my chest and the tears finally fall, he releases my face and just walks away.

Angelo has wrecked me.

Chapter 11

Angelo

Eight Months Ago

“You want me to retire?”

My father smirks before his laugh fills the office.

His office hasn’t changed in thirty years.

Dark mahogany bookshelves, thick velvet drapes that block out the city like it’s beneath him, and a massive oil painting of my mother on their wedding day above his desk.

She’s frozen in time there; smiling, radiant, looking like love was enough to tame a man like Marcello Amato.
