“Caesar said you have some information I need.”

“I do.” I leaned back in my chair and gazed into his eyes. “How much time do you have?”

“I’ve got all the time you need,” he said without hesitation.

“Well let’s get to it.”

SECRETS & LIES

J.D. Stevens

It had been a while since I experienced genuine intrigue and attraction to a woman. The kind of attraction where your hands sweat. Your heart pulsated inside your chest so loud and hard you could hear the swooshing of your blood in your ears. I haven’t had that kind of pull to anybody. Not since Dani.

Dani was the type of woman who could make you laugh, curse, and smile within the span of minutes. She just had that kind of personality that drew you in and made you hang off every word she had to say. She was beautiful, but her desirability went beyond the physical. You could tell her your deepest darkest secrets without judgment because she had her own. She was an amazing person, and no one in my mind measured up to the woman who had captured my heart. Caesar always said I didn’t give anyone a chance to be in my life because in my mind nobody would ever measure up to her and that might be true. She was the love of my life. Of course, I didn’t think there was anybodyout there as good as her. So, I was alone. And it was my choice to stay that way.

Did it get lonely? Of course, I did but I can’t get past the grief. I can’t get past the constant memories of our life together, and what I was missing because she wasn’t here anymore. And the reason she wasn’t here anymore was because someone took her away from me. Took her away from our daughter. She was a wonderful mother, awesome wife and my everything and that loss was something I would never recover from.

Since her death I haven’t dated and didn’t plan on ever doing it again. I got my fix from the club whores whenever the need arose. But a genuine connection, attraction and intrigue had never been an option.

Until now.

Watching the woman in front of me confront a man who intended to harm her, showing no fear, was incredibly captivating, and fucking hot. Rebel Pierce had caught my attention. I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing for her or for me.

As I pulled the chair from in front of her desk and placed it beside her, she gave me a scrutinizing look. She stared at me like I’d lost my mind, but she said nothing. Just turned her attention back to the computer screen.

I leaned back in the chair, with my legs spread wide, and my chin propped against my fist, waiting for her to say something.

“I can feel you staring.”

Her fingers flew over the computer keyboard, and she didn’t look up. Smirking, I leaned in closer, not only to fuck with her but to get a better look at what she was trying to uncover.

“Because I am. Is that a problem?”

I inhaled her perfume and almost groaned because her scent was so fucking delicious. She smelled like a refreshing ocean breeze on a cool summer night.

She didn’t answer my question which was fine. It didn’t matter if it was a problem because I wasn’t moving. I was going to be attached to her fucking hip until I got all the information she had about Dani.

“So, who was the guy?”

Her fingers stopped for a fraction of a second before she continued doing whatever the hell she was doing.

She wasn’t one of those women who wore a ton of makeup to enhance her beauty. She didn’t need any of that shit. She was naturally flawless. Smooth umber skin, with large waist length braids the color of mahogany wood, and big silver hoops adorning her ears.

Since this was a very successful firm, you’d think the owner would be in work attire like a dress, skirt, maybe even a pantsuit. But not Rebel Pierce. She wore light blue jean overalls, a crop top, and black Chuck Taylor’s.

“My ex,” she finally answered.

“Good to know.”

She looked at me, then down to my left hand where I still wore my wedding ring. Then turned her attention back to the computer screen. Yeah, I had fucking baggage but there was a real pull to her. Maybe it was the fact she might be able to give me answers. Or maybe it was because Rebel Pierce was a fucking goddess. Like I said no one had captured my attention since my wife, but whatever it was, I wouldn’t force it or push it away either. I was just going to embrace it and see where it went.

“Alright, Mr. Stevens...”

“J.D.”

Her brows dipped in confusion, and I couldn’t help but smile. She was fucking cute.

“My name. Call me J.D.”
