“Don’t do it,” she said, and I smiled at the horror on her face. “J.D. do not approach Agent Revels. We need to know what his problem is first.”
“But why not just ask the motherfucker straight out what his problem is?” I asked, shrugging. The idea sounded even better with me saying it out loud. “That will cut out all this wondering about shit. We’ll know.”
“Because we don’t know how you’re going to react to whatever he says. We don’t know what he knows about Dani.”
I exhaled. She was right. If he said something I didn’t want to hear about Dani, I might kill him.
“Call her brother and see what he knows about her past.”
I picked up my cell phone then dialed Demon. I put him on speaker phone so Rebel could hear what he had to say. Hopefully he knew something.
“You need to talk to Siobhan?” he asked as soon as he picked up after the fourth ring.
“Nah. I’ll call her back later. I want to get this took care of today. I have some questions about Dani.”
“You found something out?”
“Well, I’ve got an FBI agent looking to take me down.”
“That’s nothing new. They’re always gonna sniff around.”
At first that was what I thought, but now Rebel had me questioning everything when it came to Dani’s death. Now the FBI could be involved. But what would the reason be for a federal agent to be involved in a woman’s death. It made no sense, but Rebel insisted something was there, so I was going to prove it to be true or rule it out.
“Rebel believes it’s something different.”
“Did I tell you how much I like her?” he asked.
As I looked across the desk at Rebel, I couldn’t help but notice the rosy blush that colored her cheeks, which made me burst into laughter.
“You did, and she’s sitting right here with me.”
“Oh, hey darlin’. Glad to see he hadn’t fucked it up.”
She laughed. “Hey Demon. No, he hasn’t fucked it up.”
“Well, that’s good to hear.”
“Okay, D. Can we get back on topic. This agent may have been blackmailing Dani in order to get to me.”
The phone went silent.
“Demon?”
“Yeah, I’m still here. I don’t know if she went through anything when she was away at school. While she was here, we only dealt with Kira’s bullshit then you met her. But if she did Kira would know. Hold on a sec.”
“I hope she can tell us something,” Rebel said.
“Me too.”
It had to be something bad if the FBI could hold it over her head.
“Here’s Kira, J.D.,” Demon said.
“Hey J.D.! Austin said you wanted to ask me something about when me and Dani were in school?”
“Hey, Kira. Did she get into some trouble up there?” I asked.
“Define, trouble? You know how she was.”
