As they all nodded in agreement, a heavy sigh escaped from my lips. Officially she wasn’t my Old Lady. Not yet anyway. But I did like the way it sounded, and I was glad they thought of her that way.

“I can’t believe I’m actually thinking about asking her to do this. Caesar, can you please get Rebel?”

With a nod, he exited the room where we hold Church.

“We’ll take care of her, Prez,” Tank said. “I swear.”

I didn’t think they wouldn’t take her of her. I knew they’d do their best to keep her safe. However, even though I trusted these men with my life, the unknown would always make me worried for her. I just wanted her to be alright, even if I didn’t make it out of this.

The door opened and Rebel walked in with Caesar trailing behind her. He closed the door, and she walked towards me.

“You wanted to see me?”

“Yeah, sweetheart. Come here.”

I tapped my thigh, eliciting an eye roll from her, but she couldn’t help but smile. Before sliding onto my lap, she playfully pecked my lips. After taking his seat, Caesar propped his feet up on the table.

“So, what’s up?” she asked, looking around the room, before focusing back on me. “Why do you all look so serious?”

“We were discussing our next steps with Agent Revels, and we might need your help,” I said.

“Okay... you know if I can help, I will.”

I brushed her braids away from her face. “I know.”

“So, what do you need me to do?” she asked.

“I need you to bait him,” I said.

Her eyes widened. “How?”

“We haven’t discussed that yet. We just need to know if you’ll do it first.”

“If this works, what do you plan on doing once you have him?”

I sighed. “I’m not discussing that with you, Rebel. I don’t even want you involved with this, but we talked it out and we all think this is the best way to go about doing what we need to do.”

“J.D. that’s not fair. You can’t ask me to get involved then not tell me what you’re planning.”

“I’m not telling you shit, Rebel. If it goes off the rails, I need you to have some kind of deniability. You can’t get hemmed up in all this if you don’t know what’s going on. If you don’t want to do it without knowing the full plan, I understand. But I’m standing firm on my decision.”

She huffed and looked around the room then her eyes landed on Caesar.

“Don’t look at me.” He laughed, holding up his hands. “We had to convince him to let you get this involved. Take it or leave it.”

She rolled her eyes at him then looked at me. “You really aren’t going to tell me what you have planned for him?”

“No. It’s to keep you safe.”

“You do know I can take care of myself, right?” she asked with her brow arched.

“I do. But I’m in your life now. So that’s something you won’t have to worry about doing because now you have me.”

Her eyes softened, and a warm smile spread across her face. “You don’t have to lay it on so thick.”

“I’m not. I’m just stating facts.”

She took in a deep breath, then nodded. “I’m in. Just tell me what you need me to do.”
