Beep...Beep...Beep
Beep...Beep...Beep
"Ugh,what's that noise? Ah shit! My whole-body aches," I moan. Barely able to open my eyes, I attempt to scan my surroundings.
"Great! Ms. Masters, you're awake," says the short, balding man in the white dress shirt that enters the room looking down at his clipboard.
"I’m Dr. Huang, and you’re at Duke University Medical Center. Can you tell me anything about what occurred?" he questions, never looking up from the clipboard.
"I'm in the hospital?"Why am I in the hospital and how in the hell did I get here?
"Yes Ms. Masters, you’re in the hospital. You were placed in a medically induced coma for nearly two weeks," Dr. Huang responds nonchalantly.
Trying to reposition in the hospital bed, I frown at the news of me being hospitalized. “Did I get into an accident on the way home from work? How did I end up here?"
"You were brought by emergency services according to your paperwork," Dr. Huang answers, flipping through the papers attached to the clipboard. "Can you remember anything about your assault?" He makes eye contact with me for the first time.
"I was attacked?" My eyes widen as I’m confused by his statement.
He nods. "Yes, your friend," he looks down at his clipboard, then back to me, " a, um, Ms. Tyler called emergency services from your apartment on the 3rd of July. Does any of this ring any bells?"
"No," I reply, shaking my head in response and still not quite comprehending that I was attacked in my home.
"That's not unusual, Ms. Masters. Memory loss is to be expected sometimes in these situations. You will regain your memory back in time." He gives me a reassuring smile, and I let out a deep sigh, thankful that my memory loss is merely temporary.
"We've done a CT scan and an MRI. You, my dear, are a very fortunate young woman." He places my chart at the end of the bed. "There is no brain damage. You do have numerous bruises and some minor internal injuries. You will make a full recovery as long as you rest and give your body time to heal." He comes over to examine the multiple injuries to my battered body. “Your blood pressure and heart readings are all in the normal range, and your breathing has definitely improved. The bruises and other injuries you sustained are all healing properly. All that’s left to do is rest, and you will be out of here in no time.”
Bombarded with all the information, I try to digest my situation. I was attacked and was in a coma and can’t remember what happened. "Are you sure my memory loss is temporary?"
"Yes, Ms. Masters, your memory loss is only temporary, but if you would like a second opinion or to do some additional tests, we can make that happen."
Not desiring to undergo further testing and leave as soon as possible, I need to trust the doctor's diagnosis. "No sir, that won't be necessary."
"The police will be notified that you’re awake. I’ll send the nurse with some pain medicine that will be distributed through your IV." Dr. Huang smiles, points at the IV inserted in my right arm. "If you have any questions, ask the charge nurse, and she will handle any concerns you may have or get in touch with the doctor on duty. Rest, Ms. Masters."
He leaves the room.
"What the hell happened? The last thing I remember was being at home with Avery.”
Did he do this?
"Oh my God, Kira, you had me so scared," Dani confesses when she enters the room, wiping tears from her eyes. "I believed he killed you this time."
Did she just confirm that Avery, my boyfriend of two years, tried to murder me?
"Avery did this to me?" I manage to ask through my confusion.
"Yeah, sweetie. He did," she confirms, holding my hand and squeezing it with a look of pity. "You don't remember?"
"No. The doctor said there is some temporary memory loss, but I should regain it after I heal. Dani, why would he do this to me?"
"Because he is a psychotic son of a bitch. Can you remember what you were arguing about? You know what? Never mind, it's not important right now. He shouldn't have done this, but when the police find him, he is going to rot in prison for this shit."
"Wait... he...he hasn't been caught?" Panic and fear take over my body. “Oh God, what if comes back, Dani? What if he comes here?”
"Calm down, Kira," she pleads as the sounds of the heart monitor beeping faster echoes through the room. My throat feels like it’s closing, cutting off my air supply, and the walls are closing in on me.
