"No regrets. No regrets."
I pull out a trash bag from under the bathroom sink. I strip out of my blood-soiled clothes and place them in the bag, making a mental note to burn them before we head out to finish this job. I turn on the water, steam fills the bathroom, and I step in, letting the hot water cascade over my body.
Relaxing under the feel of the hot water, I wash away all remnants of Avery Hansen. The clear water turns to bright red as it swirls down the drain, and I smile. "One down, one more to go."
I sigh, allowing the steam to overtake my senses. Lost in my thoughts, I don't realize the door opening. I’m brought out of my thoughts swirling through my mind by the sound of Kira's angelic voice as she enters the bathroom.
"Austin?"
I can listen to her call my name for the rest of my life.
"Yeah, babe."
The glass shower door opens and Kira steps in, wrapping her arms around my waist. I release a deep sigh. She lays her head on my back, and I admire the contrast of our complexions. I enjoy the feel of her body close to mine as my body relaxes further from her touch. Absolutely beautiful.
"Is it done?"
"Yeah babe, it’s done." I can feel her body trembling, so I turn around to wrap my arms around her waist and pull her body into my chest.
"It's finally over." As tears of relief stream down her face, I dread having to tell her that there is one more person we have to deal with before she is completely safe.
I pull her body impossibly closer to mine. "Not yet. We have more to do."
"What? Why, Austin? Why isn't it over?"
I place a kiss on the top of her head and run my hands through her hair. "We have to find his father, Kira. Baby, you’re safe, but we still have more to do."
"Austin, I love you more than anything. Please come back to me."
"I love you too. I plan on coming back to you, babe. Nobody's going to take my future away from me."
No more words are shared as we stand under the water holding each other until the temperature becomes unbearable. Stepping out, I grab a towel and begin drying her body off as she turns to face me.
"When do you leave?" Her eyes fill with sadness and my heart begins to ache for the woman that I love.
I grab her by the waist as she closes her eyes and takes in a deep breath. "In a few minutes. I needed to clean up, and I wanted to kiss you goodbye.”
"I don't want you to go, Austin."
"Kira, I have no choice. We have to finish this or we all will be looking over our shoulders for the rest of our lives." I place a gentle kiss on her lips when the sound of her cell phone ringing breaks us from our conversation. "Put it on speaker."
"Hello?"
"Where the hell is my son, you fucking bitch!"
"Mr. Hansen, I have no idea where Avery is. I have not seen him since he tried to kill me."
I nod my head to encourage her to keep talking.
"You’re a fucking liar. I know you had something to do with what went on tonight, but guess what? You and that damn punk you're fucking will pay if anything has happened to my son!"
"What happened tonight?"
"Stop playing games, whore! You know what the fuck happened."
I take over the conversation. "David Hansen, I send my condolences."
"Condolences? You killed my son! You killed my son! Where is he? You're both fucking dead!" His voice begins to break and then there is silence.
