He answered the call and left the room while I went back and sat behind his desk, continuing to compile evidence to start the process of getting an innocent man out of prison. Blood stained Angus’ hands just like his son’s, but he was serving someone else’s time. He’d lost eleven years of his life, and I was determined for him to spend his final days at home with his family.

I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Carson. Even though it was almost eleven o’clock at night, I knew exactly where he’d be.

“Carson Bradley.”

I leaned back in Tavish’s seat. “Hey, Carson. It’s Regina.”

“It’s late, Regina.” He sounded irritated, but that was about to change.

“I know, but I have some information to share with you.”

He sighed. “I’m listening.”

“You sure you want to take this on?” I asked.

“What do you have?”

“Judge Richards is on the Bianchis’ payroll.”

“Are you serious?” he asked.

“Yes, and that’s not all. He also lied about Angus MacDaniel. Angus MacDaniel is innocent of his son’s murder.”

“No fucking way,” he said. You got evidence?”

“Video, photos, and documents. I’m emailing everything to you as we speak. I’ve also emailed them to Mr. MacDaniel’s defense attorneys. So be expecting a call from them.”

“Shit!” He released a breath into the receiver. “This is about to be a major clusterfuck, isn’t it? Do you know how many cases this could affect?”

“I do.” I sighed. “Do you still want the glory?”

There was a moment of silence, but I knew Carson all too well. He loved to be the face of the State’s Attorney’s office anytime he could get the chance, and this new evidence would put him on every news channel and newspaper in the state. Maybe even the country.

“Hell yeah,” he chuckled.

“And Carson, remember you didn’t get any of this from me. Okay?”

“You got it, Regina. Are we still on for coffee?”

I laughed. “I don’t think my boyfriend would approve.”

“Your loss,” he said, chuckling, then ended the call.

I placed the phone down on the desk and emailed him everything we’d uncovered. When I hit the send button, relief swallowed me. I was glad not only for Tavish but for Angus. He needed to spend time with his family before he died, and this was the beginning.

Tavish stalked back into the room, a scowl covering his face.

“Bad news?”

“I’ve got to go. We know who the rat is.”

I stood and walked around the desk. I cupped his face, and he leaned into my touch. “I know you can’t tell me anything, but promise me you will be careful.”

He pecked my lips. “There’s nothing to worry about, doll. If you need anything, call my cell. I’ll make myself available.”

“I love you, Tav.”

He gripped the back of my neck and pulled me to him, then crashed his mouth into mine. Like every time he kissed me, the world stopped. Nothing existed but me and him.
