“What?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“Yes, Amelia Grace. How many times did we all tell you to get rid of Chad? Ma, Angus, me, even Colin! Did you think Angus or me would let him kill a MacDaniel and go?”

She gasped, and her hands immediately dropped to her stomach. I hated bringing up her loss, but she needed to hear the truth. She needed to hear the consequences of her actions.

“What did you do?” she asked, even though she already knew.

“We did what we had to do!” I leaned back in my chair and gazed at my sister as realization sunk in. Her beloved Chad wasn’t coming back, which she should have known, but I guess the heart wants who the heart wants.

I smirked. “He took the life of a MacDaniel, and I watched him squeal like the fucking pig when I took his.”

She raised her trembling hands, covering her mouth as a sob escaped and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

“And that’s the reason I couldn’t give our father a fucking alibi. Because we were getting rid of your trash.”

She rushed to her feet and ran out of the room. I hated that she’d found out this way, but Gina wasn’t the blame for Angus being in prison, and I wouldn’t let her shoulder it.

“They are gone. Tell me what’s going on?” my mother asked calmly, cutting into her piece of haggis like I hadn’t just admitted, in front of her, to killing someone.

“I made a deal with Gina. In exchange for helping to free Angus, I’d help find her brother.”

My mother nodded, chewing her food and then taking a sip of water . “And she agreed?”

I nodded.

“Can you trust her, Tav? Regardless of what you may feel for this woman, and I assume it’s something, or your brother’s face wouldn’t look like ten men beat him.”

“Ma, he put his hands on her. I’m not gonna sit back and watch him hurt a woman. No matter who it is.”

She threw her hand up. “Tav, I’m not defending what your brother did, just stating facts.” She put her silverware down. “But my question remains. Can you trust her? She is law enforcement, and you are the president of one of the largest One-Percenter clubs in the country.”

“I’ve asked myself the same question, Ma,” I ran my hand through my hair, “but something is different about her. And I can’t walk away from her. I just can’t.”

This was something I hadn’t been expecting when Gina arrived at the clubhouse, but I wouldn’t walk away from it. I couldn’t, and I didn’t give a fuck what anyone thought about us. She wasn’t going anywhere, so it was time everyone got used to her.

“But do you trust her, son?” she repeated.

“I do,” I responded without hesitation.

She nodded. “Okay.”

“Okay? That’s it?”

Shocked rumbled through me. She didn’t lecture me on what a terrible mistake I was making or how I couldn’t trust her because she helped put my father in prison.

She laughed. “Yes, son. Okay. What did you expect?”

“Not just, ‘okay.’”

“Well, I trust you to make a good decision on behalf of you, your family, and your club. Now eat.”

“I love you, Ma.”

“I love you too, son.”
