“Then that’s all you need to know, Jade. You’ve been through a lot with Aaron’s death, and now this shit with Sam. But you have someone that makes you happy. Go to him.”

“Della, you don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand, babe. You know I’m here for you. Don’t keep all that shit inside. You don’t have to break his confidence, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

I sighed. “Has there ever been a moment where you questioned your morals and everything you thought was right?”

“All the time,” she replied.

My eyes widened at her matter-of-fact response, causing her to laugh.

“Honey, don’t be shocked. I’m a defense attorney. I skate the line between morality and immorality every day. It’s my job. It doesn’t change who I am as a person, Jade. Everyone deserves a good defense, and everyone who does something that’s terrible in the eyes of the law isn’t a bad person. I’ve seen that firsthand.”

I wasn’t naïve to what my late husband and William had done for our country. Taking a life was taking a life, wasn’t it? They had blood on their hands. So why was Samuel’s death any different?

“Look, I’m sure William did what he had to do.” She grasped my hands. “William’s a good man, Jade. And whatever he has done to make you question your own morals, I’m sure he did it for a good reason, right?”

“Yes.”

“Yes, because that’s the type of man he is. Aaron would have done the same thing.”

“I know he would have,” I admitted. “My feelings scared me, but I can’t let that keep me from the man I love.”

“No, you can’t honey. They say we only get one great love in life, but you’ve been lucky, Jade. You’ve had two.”

“I know.”

“Go talk to him. The key to any relationship is communication. Tell him what’s going on in that head of yours.”

“When did you become so wise?”

“I’ve been practicing what I preach.”

“Who is he?”

“Can’t tell you yet. When everything isn’t so up in the air, you’ll be the first one I call.”

“So, it’s serious?”

“As serious as it can be right now.” Her eyes filled with longing.

“I care for him a lot, Jade, but we’re playing it safe. Like I said, so much is up in the air right now.”

“I hope you get your forever, Della. You deserve it.

“From your lips to the Big Man’s ears. So, what are you going to do about William?”

“Work through this. Hopefully have my happily ever after.”

“I hope you get it.”

“Thank you, Della. For everything.”

William was it for me. Della was right. It wasn’t often someone was blessed to have two men love them fiercely. I wouldn’t give it up without a fight, even if I had to get out of my own way to be happy.
