Vincenzo

Two months later…

“What have you found?”

I sat in my study, the same place where I’d almost lost my life trying to prevent Daniella from killing Bella. It wasn’t easy recovering from that single gunshot wound to the abdomen, but I would do it all over again as long as Isabella lived.

“We’ve narrowed it down,” Angelo said.

“That’s not good enough, Lo!” I slammed the palm of my hand on the oak desk. “I want to know who in the actual fuck had the balls to try to kill my fucking wife!”

As soon as I recovered, Bella and I got married. We decided to forgo the extravagance. Only Cheryl, Angelo, and her father had been there when we exchanged vows because those were the only people we could truly trust, and I was glad of the decision we’d made.

“Calm down, cousin. We’ve been working non-stop on this shit since it happened. We are closer.”

“Don’t tell me to calm the fuck down, Angelo! What the hell would you do if it was Cheryl someone came after?”

“I’m not saying you can’t be pissed, Vin,” he responded, ignoring my question because he knew he would be out of his mind. Since he and Cheryl had gotten close, he was more protective than I’d ever seen before. “What I’m saying is, it’s not going to change the fucking intel I’m working on. The son of bitch hid his tracks well, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. Chill the fuck out before Bella comes in here and tears us both a new one.”

Angelo’s phone rang.

I stood and walked to the large windows that looked out over my estate. It had been two months since the attempt on Bella’s life and a month since I had been out of the hospital. It had been a long, hard road to recovery, and I still wasn’t a hundred percent, but I’d made it. Even if I hadn’t, Bella was alive. That was what mattered.

“We’ve got him,” Angelo said, rubbing his hand down his face.

I turned around and stared at my cousin. I wanted to make sure I’d heard him clearly. That they’d finally found the person behind all this shit.

He nodded. “You heard right! We fucking got him!”

“Who is it?”

“Her brother.”

“Whose brother?” I asked, confused.

“Bella’s.”

“You’ve got to be shitting me.” I plopped down in my chair, raking my hand through my hair. “God damn it!”

“It’s confirmed, Vin. Alessio Lombardo was the one behind the FBI looking into the businesses, as well as Daniella’s plan. He and Daniella had been screwing for months. Once you confirmed you wanted to marry Bella because of his fuck up encroaching on our territory, he came up with this stupid plan to get you out of the way. But Bella had to be gone first so you would marry Daniella instead. That way, she’d be close enough to take you out. Apparently, Daniella failed to tell Alessio there was no way in hell you were ever going to marry her.”

“Fucking shit! Get the evidence together, Angelo.”

He nodded.

I left my office, grabbed my cellphone from the desk, and dialed Cyrus’s number. “Cyrus, we found him. I need you to get here, now.”

I hung up, not waiting for him to respond. He understood the importance of this situation. Someone had taken a shot at his daughter, who I’d taken a bullet for. Cyrus said he would burn the entire world to the ground if it meant protecting Bella. I wondered if it remained true. If he knew he was going to have to protect his only daughter from his son.

How in the hell did I handle this? Alessio couldn’t live. He was a danger to me and Bella, but how did I explain this to her?

Cyrus wasfrailer than the last time I’d seen him. Now that Bella and I were married, he came around less and less. He understood that, although she was his daughter, she was my wife. Bella was in more than capable hands.

I shook his hand and he sat down.

“Who is it?” he asked.
