And it really was. It was like he’d known my every move.

“If you can keep your distance, make sure you do. I don’t like him.”

I stared at Vincenzo, trying to figure out what he was keeping from me, but he was in that Boss mode. His lips were pursed along and that ever-present grimace colored his face. Until he becamemyZo again, I wouldn’t get anything out of him, so I relented, going along with whatever he wanted until he was ready to divulge on his time.

“Okay,” I responded. “I will do what I can. But Zo, I work with the man. If we are on rotation together, there is nothing I can do, but I will try my best.”

“And if he shows up someplace you are, I need for you to alert the security team if I’m not around. Then call me.”

“I will.”

“I mean it, Bella. Call me.”

“I will, Zo. I promise.”

“Angelo, get it done,” he said.

Get what done?

Angelo nodded, and Vincenzo rested his head against the leather seat. It was at that moment I could see the weight he always carried outlined in the frown lines on his beautiful face. And I hated that my drama had caused some of that weight. But what could I do but let him carry it? The kind of man Vincenzo was, he wouldn’t let anyone else handle this situation. I was his to protect.

He’s a dead man walking.

His words replayed in my mind as I intertwined our fingers. The sigh of contentment he released did not go unnoticed. He craved my touch just as much as I craved his. The skin to skin contact relieved his stress, lessening the mounting burdens he carried. I’d noticed this also while we were in Belize. If he was stressed, he’d fuck me mercilessly, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I was Vincenzo’s escape, just as he was mine. And if I was his to protect, then he was mine to protect, even if it meant safeguarding him from himself.
