“I’m going to check your ears and nose, Giana, but I suspect you’ve caught the strep throat going around. I need to swab inside a bit. I’ll try to be quick. Try not to cough if you can.”

Zale opened a tube and quickly brushed the tip of the swab over the sore spots in her throat. Giana struggled not to cough, but it was so hard. Thankfully, Zale was an expert at getting a quick sample.

“That’s it, Giana. You can cough now,” he assured her as he sealed the collector inside the tube and labeled it. “Koa, help her take a drink.”

“That…”cough, cough, cough, “was mean,” Giana accused, sending him a mean look.

“Be nice to Zale, Flame. He has a tough job having to do things he knows you won’t like, but that need to be done,” Koa reminded her as he held a cup to her lips.

Giana relented slightly. “Okay.”

“I’m going to listen to your heart and lungs next,” Zale told her. He handled the responsibility and her criticism easily. She guessed he was used to it.

“Take a deep breath for me, Giana,” Zale instructed, pressing the bell of his stethoscope against her chest.

“C-cold,” Giana protested at the feel of the metal circle on her skin. Her nipples contracted into tight buds as she rounded her shoulders forward.

“Sorry, little girl.” Zale removed the cold bell and rubbed it on his T-shirt.

When he pressed it back to her skin, Giana sighed in relief. “Better.”

She held still this time as he listened carefully to her chest. Giana rested heavily against Koa’s supporting frame. She hated that simply sitting up sapped all her energy.

Zale sat back and removed the earpieces of his stethoscope. “Okay, little girl. I think I have enough information to help you feel better. Your daddy can help you stretch out.”

He turned his attention to Koa. “I’ll run the strep test to make sure, but I’m fairly sure that’s what she has picked up. I’m going to give her a broad-spectrum antibiotic to combat several strains of bugs. She should be better by the time the results come back. If not, that will give us the information we need to tailor her treatment more specifically.”

Giana let out a long-suffering sigh and sent good vibes toward Pippa for sharing her skilled daddy to help her. This was awful.

“Thanks, Zale. I hate to see her like this,” Koa said, brushing the hair from her eyes.

“I’ll give her a shot…”

“No needles!” Giana rallied to protest. She hated injections.

Zale looked at her sternly and continued, “Shot first to jump-start the healing process and then we’ll put some medicine in her bottom to melt and absorb.”

“Not in my bottom!” Giana wailed. This was awful.

“Your daddy will take care of everything for you,” Zale told her firmly before glancing at Koa. “The medicine will be most effective if you press it as deep as possible into her rectum. If Giana is naughty and tries to push it out, hold your finger in place until the suppository melts and then rub the mixture around thoroughly. Contractions from an orgasm or two will draw the medicine deeper into her system.”

Giana glanced at her daddy. They weren’t talking about this, were they?

“Got it. No sex until she feels better?” Koa asked.

“No. That will tax her breath. Let’s get the infection cleared up, and then Giana can resume all her normal activities. I do not want her to go to work until her temperature has registered at normal for twenty-four hours.”

“I have to go to work if there’s an emergency,” Giana muttered.

“Other captains can fill in for you,” Koa said confidently.

Giana shrugged and wondered how he knew so much. “I’ll get better fast,” she promised.

“Let’s get that process started. Your daddy will help you roll over on your side,” Zale said. He stood to rustle through his supplies.

After getting her into position, Koa blocked her view as Zale prepared the injection. Giana jumped at the feel of the cold disinfecting swab. She squeezed her eyes closed and clenched her jaw to prepare for the pain.

“Pinch her nipple, Koa,” Zale instructed.
