Surely, I would know if I was an omega. Omegas took knots and nested. I looked around myself, still feeling too flush, but there were no alphas coming running and no nests to be seen. Except…
Well… Imayhave nested. I wasn’t sure, but a quick Internet search made it sound like my little meltdown had, in fact, been a nesting frenzy.
Then there were knots. I wasn’t naïve; I knew about knotting. Big-knot jokes had dominated the playground when I was a child. It was common knowledge for most adults too.
Omegas were built to take knots. Betascouldtake knots, but it took a lot of practice and training. Betas could tear, and that thought made me shudder.
Worse, I still couldn’t scent anything. My lack of smell was infuriating, because that would be the biggest indicator if I wasactually an omega. Alphas would smell amazing to me, and I would be trying to climb Pack Wilder like they were sexy, hunky trees, and I was their little pesky lumberjack.
Nesting, check.
Scent, nope. I still couldn’t smell a thing.
Knots, undetermined.
Maybe, just maybe, if I tried to take a knot, I would know once and for all if the guys were right, and I was actually an omega, or if this was all an insane fever dream. But that would involve talking to them, or at least one of them, about getting…intimate. I wasn’t a meek rabbit, but I was hardly bold enough to walk up to a guy I’d known for a few days and ask him to knot me.
As much as that sounded really freaking good right now.
Chapter 16
Fitz
Melody had spent the day puttering around, and I had been resisting the urge to follow her around like one of her strays.
Not that I wouldn’tlovebeing one of her strays. All that attention? Yes, please.
Melody deserved the best in life. I wanted to buy her everything her heart desired, to treat her as well as she treated the animals in her care. Melody wasn’t the type of girl to be entranced by shiny jewelry, which had always been my go-to gift for the ladies, and I knew that wouldn’t impress her in the slightest.
Which was why I was currently lying back in my bunk while off shift, racking my brain for ideas.
I had the sale underway for the new shelter, but I wasn’t going to tell her about that until I was sure it was completed. A lot of things could go wrong when buying property, and even though I was confident, I refused to get her hopes up.
She would have a better location for her rescue, no matter what. It could potentially take a few weeks, however, and choosing a different plot of land was still a possibility.
As if my thoughts had summoned her, the pretty woman in question found me in my bunk. It was getting late, but Samson was sorting out hoses and Elliot was working away in his office, so I was all on my lonesome until she appeared.Truly an angel.
“Fitz?” she asked, gnawing on her lip.
“What’s up, firecracker?” I smiled, sliding my hands out from behind my head and sitting up straighter.
“I have a question… actually, it’s probably more of a proposition.”
That caught my attention, and I cocked a brow at her, grinning slightly. “I’m listening.”
“You guys seem to think I’m an omega, right?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.
I held her stare, unblinking. “We don’tthinkit, weknowit. You’re the one who isn’t sure.”
“Well, what if I told you I had a way to find out for sure?”
My smile growing, I leaned forward onto my elbows, balancing them on my knees. “I’d say that you’ve got my attention.”
“Knot me.”
My jaw dropped so hard that it actually cracked. I shook myself, trying to figure out if she’d really said that. Staring at her in total shock, I watched as Melody’s gaze went to the floor, and she began to fidget with her sleeves, squeezing them between her fingers.
Holy shit, she’s serious.
