“Teo—”

“I’m serious, Enzo. Ask yourself that question. What would you do if you found out she was killed by her uncle tomorrow? Can you really live with yourself then?”

I close my eyes and imagine that happening. The pain cuts me so deep at the thought that it nearly takes my fucking breath away. Taking a deep breath, I open my eyes and answer. “No… I couldn’t,” I whisper.Dammit.“I fucking couldn’t, Teo.”

Sitting back in his seat, he smiles. “Exactly.”

“For someone who wanted me to kill her less than twenty-four hours ago, you’re awfully calm about this entire situation.”

Teo shrugs. “I trust you with my life, Enzo. Your instincts are spot on when it comes to people. If you trust her and want to bring her into your life, then I want that for you too.”

I run my hand through my hair as the anxiety of the reality of this situation crawls up my neck. “Shit, Teo. What if she gets herself killed?”

“You’re not going to let that happen. I’m calling our pilot now to meet you at the tarmac. Pack a bag and get your ass to the airport. I’ll do whatever you need me to do here.”

Pushing myself up to an abrupt stand, I say, “Fuck. You’re right. I need to fucking go. Thank you, brother.”

“Always,” he says, and I rush out of his office to go pack a bag and get to the airport. If I don’t get to Amalia fast enough, I might never be able to tell her how I feel, or even worse, never see her again.

AMALIA

After tossing and turning in my bed for a couple hours, I finally managed to get some sleep, not waking up until way after the sun had already set.

After taking a much-needed shower, I put on a black crop top, black high-waisted jean shorts, and a red blazer. I finish my look off with my black thigh-high boots and my knife safely—and discreetly—secured in its holster.

When I grab my phone, I let out a mumbled“Fuck”when I realize it’s dead, then fumble to get my charger out of my bag so I can plug it into the wall.

As soon as it powers on, I’m flooded with voicemails and texts.

Enzo.

My heart sinks, knowing he’s probably discovered I’m no longer in the city. I’m about to click on one of his messages when a phone call from Armando comes through.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Finally, you pick up,” he exclaims. “I was about to head over to your place and make sure you’re not fucking dead. What the hell, Amalia?”

“I know, I’m sorry. I completely forgot to charge my phone, so it’s been dead for who knows how long. What’s going on?”

“One of my guys just let me know Alejandro and José are at Fabien’s club.”

“Great,” I say eagerly. “I’ll meet you over there now.”

“No,” he rushes out. “I can’t. My dad just called for a meeting with me and Diego. He didn’t say anything about you or Carlos, but I’m not sure what else he’d be calling an emergency meeting for, so I need to go see what’s going on.”

“Shit,”I hiss out. “How long do you think it’ll take?”

“Not sure, but I don’t want you heading over there without me, so I’ll call you when we’re done here, okay?”

I let out a sigh. “Alright.”

“I mean it, Amalia. If I find out you’ve left your condo, I’m going to?—”

“I saidalright.”

“Good.” He lets out a sigh. “Look, I’m not trying to be a dick, but you can’t go by yourself. Alejandro and José will probably be there the rest of the night. I’ll try and rush my dad, and then pick you up and we’ll head over, okay?”
