“Because what?” he growls.
“Never mind.”
“No. You don’t get to do that. Tell me what’s on your mind.”
“You don’t want to know, Luca. Trust me.”
“How can I when you don’t trust me?”
I wince. He’s right. I don’t fully trust him right now, which breaks my heart. “I just have to go.” I hang up before he can say anything else.
The minute I set my phone down, I break out into sobs. It wasn’t supposed to go like this. Luca and I were supposed to be happy and enjoy our lives together. Then Romeo invaded and ruined everything. Then Luca made decisions I disagreed with, and then I made decisionshedisagreed with. And on and on it goes.
My phone lights up as Luca calls me back but I can’t answer. I don’t want him to hear me cry.
CHAPTER4
Luca
Nat thinks she can just string me along like this. I could hear the pain in her voice over the phone. She’s my wife. I want us to be together. I’m tired of this separation, and she needs to see that.
So, I go over to her parents’ house and sneak into her bedroom just like old times.
I pause in the window frame. She’s crying. And it’s because of me.
She must hear me because she quickly wipes her tears away and looks in my direction. “Luca?”
I enter her room. “Nat, you’re pushing me away, and I’m fucking tired of it.” I storm over to her bed, grab the back of her neck, and pull her in for a kiss.
She immediately responds, gripping my arms with a strength I’ve never experienced from her before. I lean her back onto her bed and kiss her like my fucking life depends on it.
Our bodies are flush together. God, I’ve missed touching her like this. It’s been at least a week since we’ve had sex. Far too long. If I could have Nat in my arms every day for the rest of my life, even that wouldn’t be enough.
But then she pulls away. “Luca, stop.”
“Why?”
“Because I said stop.”
Sighing, I sit back. “What’s going on with us? Just talk to me.”
“I don’t know what to say to you, Luca.” She wraps her arms around her legs and rests her chin on her knee. It’s like she’s symbolically closing herself off from me. I fucking hate it.
I shoot off the bed, feeling more riled up than ever before. “Goddamnit. You’re blaming me for everything. How is any of this my fault?”
She unfurls herself and stands before me. “How is it not? I warned you about your plans. You didn’t listen.”
“No, you just decided to go behind my back and ruin everything.”
“If you’d come up with better plans, I wouldn’t have gone behind your back.”
“What better plans? My ideas were perfect until you decided to go against my wishes. I could have killed Romeo by now. You know that right?”
“Ugh! Luca. Listen to yourself. Your plan involved kidnapping a child and involving the police in Mafia business. How is any of that a good idea?”
“It was until you went behind my back!” I shout.
“No, it wasn’t!” she shouts back.
