I follow my dad out of the station. “How did you get me out?”

He gives me a sly look. “You know I own half the force. It was easy. I made it so you were never there.”

“Like I wasn’t even processed?”

“Exactly. Of course, detectives like the one questioning you will remember you, but at least they don’t have you on file anymore.”

“You make it sound like it was so easy.”

“With the power I have, it was.”

As we head to his car, I stop. Luca is leaning against it. His expression isn’t particularly happiness.

He’s angry with me. For going after Romeo? For calling my father instead of him?

I’m not sure.

All I know is—I don’t think this will be good.

CHAPTER2

Luca

Seeing the messy mascara smudges around Nat’s eyes angers me. She’s been crying. She’s also spent the entire night in a jail cell. The urge to hug her is strong, but I stop myself.

I’m fucking pissed.

She went to Romeo and got herself captured by the police. Why the fuck would she do that? Betray me like that?

“Natalya,” I say stiffly when she approaches me.

“I’ll give you some space,” Alek says. “But be nice.” I know he’s warning me. He walks a few paces away.

“You didn’t call me Nat,” she responds.

“I know.” I don’t say anything more.

“You’re angry at me.” It’s not a question. She knows.

I push myself off the car. “Of course, I am! Why the fuck did you go to Romeo in the first place? Why would you do that?”

“I wanted to end this war between you two. I was desperate. I thought if I could convince him to back off, he would.”

“You really thought that? How stupid can you be?”

She flinches. “Don’t call me stupid. I had a plan, and it failed. I messed up, I know. I don’t need you angry with me, too.”

“How can I not be? How did you even think you could convince Romeo to stop?”

“By telling him about your plan.”

Everything inside me freezes. “Wait. You warned him about my plan?” My voice is calm, but everything else inside me surges like a wildfire.

She shifts on her feet, not looking at me. “Yes.”

“Why would you do that? Why would you betray me like that?”

Her head whips back up. “It wasn’t a betrayal. I thought if I told him about your plan, he’d realize your power. I thought it would scare him away. Instead, he took me to his warehouse. We arrived moments before the police.”
