We sway together in each other’s arm for a moment.

Then, he says, “We should go out.”

I pull back. “What do you mean? You just said you’d stay inside to make sure we’re safe.”

“I know. And I intend for us to be safe. The police haven’t found us here. Your dad is already working on erasing the video footage of us, so our faces won’t be plastered everywhere. We should go out on a date. In disguises, of course. It’ll be fun. When’s the last time we’ve gone on a true date?”

“Our honeymoon?”

“Yeah. And we had to cut it short because of Romeo.”

I sigh as I press my head to his chest. “You’re right. A date does sound nice.”

“Your dad sent us fake IDs and wigs. We could use them.” After we made it to the safe house, I called my dad and told him everything. The very next day, he sent us the IDs and wigs, as well as new credit cards under the fake names.

“But isn’t it risky? My dad sent us those things in case of an emergency. Not to use on a date.”

A flirty smile passes over his lips. “Come on … I know you want to.”

He knows me too well. “Fine. A date it is.”

“I actually had an idea in mind that could be fun.”

When it comes to Luca, fun is usually mixed with a little bit of danger.

Which is why, an hour later, I’m entering the restaurant of a high-end hotel, wearing a red wig and a skimpy black dress. It’s risky being out, knowing both the police and Romeo are looking for us. But it’s also exhilarating.

I spot Luca at the bar. Even though he has a blond wig on, I’d recognize him anywhere. I approach him slowly, sashaying my hips. We decided to play a fun role-playing game. Since we’re already in disguises, we might as well act like the fake people we’re pretending to be.

“I like your blond hair,” I say to him.

He rakes his eyes over me in that way of his that makes me shiver. “I like your red hair. Care to join me? I’ll buy you a drink.”

“I’d love to.” I slide into the seat next to his.

Luca nods at the bartender. “One bourbon and one red wine.” He turns to me. “So, what’s your name?”

“Jen. What’s yours?”

“Robert.”

We shake hands.

Our fake names are deliberately neutral, so we don’t draw attention to ourselves.

Luca keeps my hand in his for a while. “You have soft hands.”

“I moisturize.”

“I can see that.” He kisses the top of my hand. It’s a simple gesture, but it makes me blush, even though we’ve done a lot more than a hand kiss. “You’re blushing, Jen.”

“I know. You’re very bold.” The bartender sets out drinks down, and I take a sip of my wine. “But I like bold.”

He raises an eyebrow. It’s a good look on him, arousing me even further. “I’m glad to hear it.”

“So, what do you do for work?”

“I’m a surgeon. I save lives.”
