I go to untie her when Luca stops me. “What are you doing, Nat?”

“Untying her.”

“No, you’re not. We can’t risk her going to the police.”

“But we can’t just leave her tied up like this. No one knows she’s here. She could die.”

He sighs before loosening Dr. Ryder’s ties. “There. You’ll still need to untie yourself, but it’s manageable.” He turns to me. “Better?”

I nod. “Better.”

“Wait!” Dr. Ryder calls out. “You said you’d untie me.”

“You’ll be able to make it out of that,” Luca says.

Dr. Ryder has her eyes on me. “Please. Untie me. You promised.”

I look back and forth between her and Luca. “Sorry,” I eventually say. “I’ve got to go with my husband. I wish you the best.”

I leave Dr. Ryder as her shouts follow us out the door.

CHAPTER9

Luca

“How long will it take to get to the new safe house?” Nat asks. She’s driving since I’m still healing, even though it won’t take me long to heal.

“Around forty minutes or so. Just get on the highway. We’ll be going straight for a while.” I settle into my seat, watching her as she drives. “God, you’re beautiful.”

She flashes me a smile. “Oh? I am?”

“Yes, you are,” I growl. “I can’t wait to fuck you when I’m feeling better.”

“Luca.”

“What? It’s the truth.”

“I’m driving right now. Keep it in your pants.”

I chuckle. “Ok. I’ll be patient.” After a beat, I ask, “What did you and the good doctor talk about?”

“Oh. Nothing. She just tried questioning me, but I didn’t give anything away. I wonder how long it will take until she’s out of her binds.”

“Once we get to the safe house, we’ll need to find a new car. She knows what it looks like. There’s no doubt she’ll call the police on us.”

“I hope she doesn’t.”

“Nat, don’t be naïve.”

She sighs, her hands tightening around the wheel. “I know. I just have hope.”

That hope is quickly dashed fifteen minutes later when I see a cop car trailing us.

“Do you think that’s for us?” Nat asks.

“They haven’t turned on their sirens. It could be a coincidence.”

“Luca, you know there are no coincidences.”
