CHAPTER7

Luca

The doctor immediately gets on her knees and starts begging. “Please don’t kill me. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called the police. If you just go, I won’t call them back.”

“What did you tell them?” I ask, pushing through the pain in my side. It hurts like a motherfucker, but I’ll survive. I’ve been through worse.

“I … I didn’t get the chance before you came in. I swear,” she says when I lift the gun higher. “I didn’t tell them anything.”

“You know where we’re staying,” Nat says. “You could call the police and have them come after us.”

“Which we don’t want,” I add.

“Of course,” Dr. Ryder says. “I understand. Just let me live, and I won’t call the police.”

“I don’t trust her,” Nat says quietly to me. “I told her before that I wouldn’t harm her if she helped you. But then she turned on us and called the cops. She’ll do it again.”

“You’re right. She will.” I turn back to Dr. Ryder. “I have no use for you.”

“Please!” She raises her hands above her head. “Please don’t kill me. I’ll do anything you want. I swear. Just don’t kill me.”

“Luca, we don’t need to kill her.” Nat puts her hand on my arm. “Lower the gun.”

“But you just said we can’t trust her.”

“You’re right. We can’t. But why don’t we take her to the safe house, tie her up, and keep her there until you’re well enough and we can find somewhere else to go? That way, if she does call the police, we’ll be long gone. And I’ll call my dad and have him clear all of this up so we’re not in trouble.”

“It’s not a bad plan,” I admit.

“Murder doesn’t always have to be the first option.”

I sigh as I lower the gun. “I guess you’re right.” I approach Dr. Ryder and grab her arms. She struggles against my grip. “Just hold still,” I grit out. “You’re coming with us.”

“No, please. Just let me go. I’ll do anything.”

“We’re not going to kill you,” Nat explains.

“My wife is right. We’re just going to hold you hostage until I can find us another safe house. How does that sound?”

Dr. Ryder whimpers. “It doesn’t sound good.”

“Well, better than being killed.” I push her toward the door. “Now, start walking.” I keep the gun on her as we approach my car. Blood stains cover the back seat. My blood. I’ll have to get that cleaned. What a fucking inconvenience.

Dr. Ryder decides that now is the perfect time to be stupid because she starts running away.

“Damnit,” I growl. “I can’t run after her. I can barely fucking walk right now.”

“I’ll do it,” Nat says.

“No, I’ve got a better idea.” I point in the gun in Dr. Ryder’s direction and fire. The bullet lands on the ground a couple inches away. She falls to the ground, covering her head. I can see her shaking from where I stand. I manage to walk over to her. “Are you done?”

She glances up at me. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“You’re stupid. Now, get the fuck up.”

She does as she’s told and starts walking back to the car. Nat holds the back door open for her. “Please don’t do this,” she says to Nat.

But what this doctor doesn’t know is that my wife can be just as ruthless as me.
