“Just be patient. At least wait until Alek is better. He’ll go with you.”

I sigh, knowing she’s right. “Ok. I’ll come up with a plan. I’ll go with Alek. But he better get better soon. I’m not waiting much longer.”

An hour passes before the doctor retrieves us. “I got both bullets out and stitched him up. He was lucky nothing hit a vital organ. He was also lucky there was no internal bleeding.”

Katia runs into the living room, and I follow behind more slowly.

Alek looks worse for wear, but he’s alive. Katia wraps her arms around him. He grunts from the force of it and then immediately wraps her into a hug.

Watching them, I can tell how strong their love is. Nat and I are the same. We’d do anything for each other.

“Romeo called,” I explain to Alek. “He told me where Nat is. I’m going after her.”

“Good. So am I.” Alek winces as he gets up.

“You should rest,” the doctor advises. But after Alek throws a glare at him, he says, “Then again, you never listen. Do what you want.”

Alek gives me a nod. “Let’s go.”

We reach the address Romeo gave me and observe the house from down the street. Multiple guards hang out front, patrolling. Romeo isn’t playing games. He wants to kill me and get this over with.

“I say we just go in and start killing people,” I say.

“We wait for backup, and then, we go in.” Alek already called on all his men to join us. After waiting about another hour, the backup arrives. “Let’s do this.”

Alek, his men, and me—around fifty—all descend on the house. The guards don’t stand a chance. They’re dead before they can even blink.

We enter the house and have to fight off more guards.

But then … the sound of sirens is loud in the air.

Alek and I exchange a look. Shit. The police. Probably responding to all the gun shots.

“You find her,” Alek tells me. “I’ll stay here.”

I hurry down the hallway as Alek continues to kill Romeo’s men. Even as pale and weak as he is, he’s still stronger than most of the men in that room.

The front door bursts open, and a slew of police officers enter the house, yelling at Alek and his men to drop their weapons.

I pause for a moment.

Alek doesn’t fight as he’s locked into handcuffs. He just gives me a look, reminding me that I need to find Nat.

I give him one nod before venturing further into the house.

CHAPTER17

Natalya

Ijerk awake from the loud barrage of gunshots. My shoulder aches from being pressed against the hard metal of the cage. I don’t even know how I managed to fall asleep, but I think the sheer exhaustion of everything had something to do with it. I’m still healing from my wound. I don’t even know if my dad is alive. I’m sure Luca is looking for me, but I don’t know if he’ll find me.

The gunshots upstairs give me hope, though. I know what that means. A fight is breaking out, and I doubt it’s between Romeo and his men.

Luca.

He has to be here.

“Hey!” I shout, rattling the cage. “I’m down here!”
