“Damn, Cuddy. I was trying to slide?—”
“Already slid. Slid her right into my life. Sorry, Cuddy. Better luck next time.”
He frowned. “I should have known yo’ ass was gon’ get her. What happened to that no dating employees rule shit you put in place?”
“That doesn’t apply to me. It only applies to your ass. D, you’re not about to do what the fuck you have been doing. You almost got us sued because you keep fucking with my assistants. It’s why I can never keep any of them. But I refuse for you to fuck with Layne. She’s mine and the best at what she does. Leave her the fuck alone, Cuz.”
“Man, them bitches just saw dollar signs and saw an opportunity to get something out of you. I didn’t do half the shit them hos said I did.”
“Are we done here?” I wasn’t about to sit and listen to his lies. Whatever they said he did, he did that shit.
He scoffed. “Yeah . . . I guess so.” He stood from the chair and headed toward the door, then turned to look at me. “You do know this shit won’t last, right?”
I frowned. “What you mean?”
“Work romances never last, my guy. There’s always someone else the other party have their eyes on.” He smirked, then walked out of my office. I didn’t want to have to beat my cousin’s ass. I knew Layne and I had only known each other for a couple weeks, but the shit I felt for her couldn’t be ignored.
I think I kind of knew the person Layne was, and she didn’t strike me as the type to cheat or creep. Nonetheless, I knew how Denver was. The nigga was going to keep trying his hand at her, and I had no doubt that I was going to have to step to him.
I picked up my cell and dialed Layne’s number. I needed to hear her voice.
“Hey, you.” She answered on the third ring.
“What’s up, baby? How was your lunch?”
“Eh, same old, same old. How was yours? Did they mess up your steak again?”
“Nah. I think they ass knows better now.”
She giggled. “Bloody ass steak. They truly thought you were a vampire or something!”
I laughed. “I want to ask you something.”
“Sure.”
“Are you okay with our parents meeting? I know it’s early, but since my family brought you up at dinner last Sunday, they kind of want to meet the woman that got my grown ass smiling so hard.”
“I’m okay with it if you are. No pressure. We can play it however you want. I don’t mind.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah. My parents will understand if we cancel. I kind of like having you to myself for now anyway.”
“Me too. We can set something up after the party. I don’t think I mentioned how fucking beautiful you look today either,” I complimented, looking over at her through the glass that separated our offices.
She laughed. “You tell me that every day.”
“Because it’s true. Can I be honest with you?”
“Always.”
“I have never been as attracted to anyone as I am with you. It’s like I can’t stop thinking about you, and every time I try, shit never works out.”
“You want to forget about me already?” She laughed.
“Hell no. Never. I just don’t want you to think we’re moving fast, because I like how this is going. I like the smell of you,the taste of you, and the sound of your voice, the sway in your walk . . .”
“Tell me more.” I could hear the blush in her tone, and I smiled.
