“I beg to differ. I only interned there as an assistant just to have something under me since I’d never worked a day in my life. As you can see, I didn’t get hired in. It was just something to put on my résumé.”
“Damn, just use me, huh?”
She giggled. “I had to. You know how it is.”
“I do. Now that you’ve told me about your degree, I want nothing more than for you to use it. After the anniversary party, I want you to become my social media manager.”
“Say what now?”
I laughed. “You heard me. As much as I’d love for you to stay close to me, I want you to do what you worked hard and put yourself in debt for. The pay is more too.”
“Avery . . . That-are you sure?”
“I wouldn’t have said it if I wasn’t. I like you. I want to see you shine. I’m going to dread looking for another assistant, but for you, I’ll endure it.”
“You don’t have to do that. I haven’t even been your assistant that long.”
“Do you want to stay next to me or follow your dreams and pay off that debt? I mean, I’m not opposed to having you near me,” I said, licking my lips and smiling at her. Layne’s cheeks were turning pink as she tried to hide her blush.
“I—I don’t know what to say. My degree was the reason I even came to the open interviews at your company. Jennifer told me you needed a business manager. I wanted to kick her ass for lying to me, but I’m glad she did recommend for me to apply.”
“I’m glad she did too.” We stared at each other before her eyes went out to the setting sun. She was shy. I loved that about her because I was the same way before, only I grew out of that once I started having sex. All that shy shit went out the window.
“Come on, we got one more stop to make.”
“Okay.”
I gathered our trash and tossed it, then took her hand, escorting her back to her truck. I was determined to make Layne Grant fall madly in love with me.
Night had fallen, and we ended up at Campus Martius Park. There was festive lighting and people all around, dancing to the band playing. There was a woman singing “Square Biz” by the late Teena Marie as my head swayed to the beat. The whole thing was a vibe, and dancing had always been my favorite pastime.
This sexy ass corporate boss was making me feel things I hadn’t felt in a long time. I didn’t excuse the fact that he ceased the opportunity to make me think I was on call today just to take me on a date. I was skeptical at first, but his plan to keep this professional at the office while secretly courting me outside ofAromatiquemade things a little easier, but not all the way. I was still afraid it would get out that we were dating, but he was right. Fuck what people thought. I just didn’t want myname in strangers’ mouths, because I wouldn’t hesitate to check someone.
Jen had called me several times. How quickly I had forgotten that we were supposed to hang out this weekend. Avery averted my damn plans, but I didn’t mind. Everything he said he wanted to do to me, I wanted him to do. It had been a long six months since I felt a hard body on top of mine, and Avery’s body was beautiful from what I could tell.
He wore all white and managed to not get one stain on him. The fitted slacks and shirt left little to my growing imagination below his waist. He wore teal suede dress shoes with a teal tie that he shedded once we pulled inside a parking lot. We held hands and walked to the park and were now heading to the makeshift bar they had inside.
“What would you like to drink?”
I smiled. “Strawberry margarita.”
He nodded. “Got you.” We waited in line, then he placed our orders. Once we received our drinks, we found a table and continued talking—mainly about our childhoods—and before I knew it, I was on my third glass and feeling nice.
“I love this song,” I said, rocking my body to “Best Of Me” by Anthony Hamilton.
“You want to dance?”
“Sure,” I replied as he stood, offering me his hand. I took it, and he led me to the center of the park where people were dancing and having a good time. He spun me around as I laughed and wrapped my arms around his neck.
“. . . Let’s stay for a while and play. Such a beautiful woman.” Avery sang as I laughed.
“I’m pretty sure he said such a beautiful moment,” I corrected.
“I know what he said. I made up my own lyrics since I’m standing in front of one.” I smiled then kissed his lips. When Ifelt his tongue slither across my lips, I captured it, kissing him slowly. I felt his arms tighten around my waist, pulling me in closer, and my fingers raked over the nape of his neck. I could feel the fire blazing through me in our heated kiss.
“I want you so bad, Ms. Grant. How spontaneous are you?” he whispered against my lips.
I knew it was the drinks that had me boldly tonguing this beautiful man down, and also because I had been wanting to kiss him again since our first time. Him asking me about spontaneity heightened my curious mind.
