She nodded. “So good that my family always appoints me to cook majority of the food on holidays.” She beamed.

“You’re going to have to let me be the judge of one of your meals. Come on.” I waved her on to distract her from dwelling on what I said. I noticed she tended to overthink and overreact sometimes, and I’d only known her for a day and a half.

We entered the lab as I spotted Kiana, my lab manager, standing over the mixing bowl.

“Kiana, this is my new assistant, Layne Grant. Ms. Grant, this is Kiana, the boss of the lab.”

Kiana smiled and reached out her gloved hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Grant.”

“You as well,” Layne replied, reciprocating Kiana’s greeting.

“I’m just showing her around.”

“Do your thing.” Kiana nodded, getting back to work.

I turned to Layne. “This is our daisy room. We keep separate rooms for different fragrances, to not let one scent overpower the other. Sometimes we’ll test mixing different fragrances, but for the most part, we try to keep it separate.”

“It smells wonderful in here. Like fresh scented flowers.”

“That’s the goal.” I winked, then opened the door for us to walk back out. “It’s too many rooms to the lab, so we won’t explore them all. Let me show you the ballroom.” We headed back to the elevators and took it up to the second floor. It opened up to the huge ballroom that could host up to six hundred people, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a kitchen, and two restrooms.

“Wow! This is huge.”

“It is.”

“Do you have enough employees to fill this space for the anniversary?”

“Other companies we merged with will be in attendance as well as their employees. The guest list is upward three hundred people already.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Which reminds me, while you’re finding a caterer, be sure to look over the people who RSVP’d. You’ll need a headcount to give them.” She was typing inside of her iPad before I even finished my sentence. That made me smile.

“The tables and chairs have already been ordered; they’re just waiting on payment.”

“Handle it today. You have the card.”

“Gotcha.”

“I want to show you one last floor before we have to get back to work.”

“Okay.” She turned too quickly and crashed right into me, almost falling before I caught her by her waist. The closeness, the sweet scent of her perfume, and the rhythm in her heart had my lips on hers before I could think of what I was doing. Her lips were soft and tasted like vanilla wafers.

Her body tensed.

My lips had a mind of their own.

I slid my tongue across her bottom lip, and she captured it with her soft lips. Before either of us knew it, we were in a heated kiss as my hands grabbed two handfuls of her ass.

I knew it was soft. Fuck!

Obviously coming to the realization of what was happening, she hurriedly pulled away from me.

“I-we-we can’t. I’m so sorry.” She seemed to be panicking before I took her by the hands.

“Layne . . .” Her eyes came to me. “Breathe.” She let out a small breath. “Let me apologize. I didn’t mean for that to happen, but I couldn’t resist.”

“We can’t do this . . . It wouldn’t be right.”
