I chuckled. “She has to say yes first.”

“She will. I know she will. Oh, I gotta get off here. I was not prepared to cry like this. Congratulations brother/cousin in-law! I’m so happy for y’all.”

“Thank you, Tinka.”

I could hear her crying as she hung up the phone.

Ms. Kira shook her head. “That damn girl. Sooo… when are you thinking?”

“Well, I want to take her house shopping with me. I have a few lined up with my realtor next week. I’ve slowly been pickingher brain about her dream home so I think we might have some luck. I want to propose in the place where it first started for us.”

She frowned. “The hospital morgue?”

“Okay, maybe not the first place. Come to think of it, not the second place either, because it was the emergency room. The third place for sure. It was in the park. That was our first unofficial date.”

“The park would be perfect.”

“I want everyone to be there.”

“You just give us a date, and we’ll make it happen.”

I was getting excited now.

Engagement ring: Bought.

Her aunt’s blessing: Granted.

All there was left to do was purchase our forever home and get this proposal under way. Life was coming together beautifully.

Isat in the doctor’s office, nervously shaking my leg.

The reason I made an appointment was because my period was late. Every month since I first got my cycle, it came on like clockwork. I could guess it down to the date and it was always right on time.

Not this month.

As a matter of fact, it didn’t come last month either. I was in such a blissfully happy state that I didn’t even realize it. It wasn’t until I went looking under the bathroom sink for something and saw the unopened box of tampons did I realize I was late. Very fucking late. The realization had me running to my period app to see when the last time I’d logged a period. It was almost three months ago.

After getting over the initial shock, I made an appointment with the doctor Asia recommended as her primary carephysician a while back when I was looking. Now here I was, sitting in this waiting room, a nervous wreck.

“Calm down, baby girl,” Jaxson Senior said, resting a hand on my knee.

I’d asked him to come with me. While I loved Ms. Tabitha, I knew she would be excited and possibly spill the beans. Mr. Pierre was quiet and laid back. He never said too much and didn’t get in your business unless you put him there. He and I had built a bond the last couple of months.

At times, I felt a little awkward because I’d never had the traditional father. Sometimes I didn’t know what to say to this man, but he always made me feel warm and welcomed.

“I’m so nervous,” I admitted.

He chuckled. “Don’t be nervous now. You weren’t nervous when you and my son were doing what you were doing to get to this point, now were you?”

I gasped. “Mr. Pierre!”

“I’m just saying. You have nothing to worry about. If this test comes back positive, then we all get a baby out of it. If it’s negative…” He laughed. “Well, if it’s negative, I know it won’t be long before we are right back here because I see the way my son looks at you.”

I knew my face was red. I knew he didn’t think I was innocent, but I didn’t want to think about him knowing his son turned me every way but loose in the bedroom. He didn’t need to know the way that man would fuck me until I had tears streaming down my face and my voice was hoarse.

“Wynter Driscoll!” the nurse called.

I took a deep breath as Mr. Pierre stood and offered me his arm. We walked to the back and the nurse closed the door.
