It was as if my mother had just noticed her. She looked up and smiled.
“You’re Kira’s daughter?”
“I am.”
“You look like your mama too. You feisty like her?”
Tikayla snapped her fingers. “And is!”
They shared a laugh as Wynter continued to stare at the pictures. Tears brimmed her eyes. I could only imagine what this meant for her. She didn’t grow up with her mother. She didn’t have memories with her, only the memories of those closest to her, which was really just her aunt from what she told me. Now she had my mother and knowing that lady, she had stories for days about their time together. It wouldn’t bring her back, but maybe it would further help her understand who the woman was.
When the first tear fell, the rest followed. Me, my mother, and Tikayla wrapped our arms around her. Jamari came over to join in while my baby cried her eyes out. She came back home to nothing but a house. If I had anything to do with it, she would have a family here too.
After my crying spell and talk with his mother, Jaxson took me to the bathroom to wash my face. Mrs. Pierre explained to me how she and my mother lost touch after they graduated from high school. They’d both gone off to college, gotten married, and started families. She and Mr. Pierre didn’t move back here until Asia was seven, years after my mother’s death.
Learning that his mother and mine had been best friends did something to me. I felt like she’d sent me another person that was close to her, to share part of her life with me. It was a bonus that her son was the man I was slowly but surely falling for. As I sat on the sink, he gently rubbed the warm rag over my skin, all while placing soft kisses to my lips. I felt so loved and taken care of in this moment.
“How are you feeling?” he asked.
“Better. You must be sick of me crying?—”
“Stop it. I could never get sick of you, Wynter. Ever.” He kissed me again. “You know you’re stuck with my mother now, right? She loves going down memory lane and she’s gonna talk your head off about your mom.”
I smiled. “I’m okay with that.” I looked around the bathroom. “Remember the last time you had me on a counter?”
He grinned. “I think about it every time I go in that bathroom.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck and pecked his lips. “Wemiss y’all.”
He laughed, realizing that the we in question was me and my pussy missing him and his dick.
“Wemiss y’all too,” he answered, pressing himself between my legs. “Your cousin is heading home today right?”
“Yes.”
“Spend the night with me. I have court in the morning and being with you will ease some of the tension I feel.”
“You wanna know something?” I said, fingering his beard. “I brought a bag with me.”
He grinned. “You just knew I was gonna ask you to stay, huh?”
“I hoped you’d want to be as close to me as I wanted to be to you.”
He kissed me soft and deeply, his hands resting on my ass. We were just starting to get into it when there was a knock on the door.
“Alright now, Jaxxy. Don’t be in there trying to console my girl in other ways,” Asia said loud enough for only us to hear.
I broke into laughter as I opened the door. “Hey, girl. You’re alive today. That’s good.”
Asia giggled. “I needed a power nap. Those drinks were still on my ass.” She pulled me into a hug. “You okay, boo? Mommy told me she knew your mother.”
“I’m fine,” I said, pulling back. “I just had to cry a little bit, but I’m good now.”
“Good. We’re about to eat. Wash your hands, nasties.”
She playfully mushed her brother before walking away. Jaxson and I washed our hands and headed into the dining room. The table was set, and everybody was seated with two spots left for us on either side of Jamari. She smiled and squeezed my hand as we grabbed our seats.
“You okay now, Ms. Wynter.”
