“I admit, I might have had a little too much to drink yesterday but I wasn’t drunk during your first wedding.”
“I had to stop you from dancing on the table. Holden was no help as he wanted to see you do it,” she scoffs.
“I am sorry, it won’t happen again. I promise,” I say as I turn back to hug her in a tight squeeze.
“It won’t, cause I’m not getting married again,” she said as we both burst into laughter. “Do you know how annoying it is for Preston and me to get interrupted by Teddy on our wedding night?’ she asked.
“Huh?”
“You were supposed to watch him, not drink the whole bar.”
“I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” I hug her tighter.
“It’s okay, Holden came to our rescue,” she notes. “Speaking of Holden, you might want to thank him for the painkillers. He knew you’d need it.”
“He’s still here?” I ask, totally shocked.
“I know right. Preston and I are also surprised. You can thank him in the dining room later,” she adds as she pecks my cheeks and walks out of the room.
I feel a sudden flutter in my stomach as I think about him.
As I walk into the family brunch, hungover, I keep replaying last night in my mind. I keep my gaze focused on the ground, trying not to draw attention to myself as I take a seat near the end of the table.
Last night, I felt the best I have since my last breakup. I felt like things were finally starting to return to normal in my life. Like I might be able to return to being a human again.
When I look up, I see Holden walk into the room and take the seat beside me. His mouth is set in a hard line and he keeps glancing at the smartwatch on his wrist.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
“You’re welcome,” he replies, still glancing at his watch.
“I’m surprised you’re still here.”
“I’ve got a delivery to make.”
“Is everything okay?” I ask, whispering so I don’t draw the attention of everyone talking around us.
Holden shrugs and pours himself a mimosa from the pitcher in the middle of the table. “I’ve been better, and I’ve been worse. I’ve just got some shit going on with my job. Seems like nothing is going to go right and I’m going to be dealing with a never-ending shit storm when I get back to work.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” I pour myself an iced coffee, rolling my eyes when Audrey leans across the table and pours a tiny bottle of rum cream into it.
Audrey winks at me and leans back in her chair, turning her full attention to Preston.
Holden doesn’t say anything as he switches his iced coffee for mine. When I look at him, he gives me a small smile. He sips at the iced coffee, making a face before glancing at his watch again.
“Holden, if you have to go or something, I can make an excuse for you with everyone else.”
He shakes his head. “There’s nothing that you can do to help, but thank you.”
“What’s going wrong at work?” Plates of food are passed around the table and I load my plate with pancakes. “Even if there is nothing I can do to help, it might make you feel better to talk about it.”
He picks at a piece of bacon before turning slightly to face me. “It’s nothing, really. A coworker isn’t following through with his end of the deal. He’s blown me off twice already regarding a client we’re working with. He hasn’t been able to get the deliverables in on time. It’s really not that bad.”
“If it bothers you, you’re allowed to say that it bothers you.” I smile at him before taking a long sip of my coffee. “I’m not going to judge.”
“So, tell me something then, because there is something else that’s been bothering me.”
“What?” I pop a slice of strawberry into my mouth.
