I walk to the center of the living room and take off my shirt. I notice the two bullets lodged deep into my kevlar vest. I quickly take it off before turning back to Audrey to answer her barrage of questions.
“I’m not the man you think you know, Audrey. I’m much worse.”
A few moments later, I’m in the kitchen icing my sore abs where the bullets would’ve gone through had they not been stopped by the kevlar vest.
I still hear Audrey asking questions to Hannah, trying to urge her to unveil more secrets about my life.
“Are you serious?” Audrey asks.
“Yes, it wasn’t really a surprise when he told me but you’ll get used to it, plus he’s retired,” Hannah tells her.
“Oh, I see,” Audrey says as she stares my way, still in shock.
Chapter Twenty-Five
Holden
Hannah’smouthdropsopenas we step off the private jet. Her gaze lands on the Italian flag flying high above the tarmac. I watch the tears spring to her eyes as she turns to look at me.
“We’re in Italy?”
I grin and nod. “Yes. I thought you might like to see the place where you set several of your spy novels in person.”
Hannah is nearly bouncing on the balls of her feet as she looks at the small airport we’re going to walk into. I didn’t tell her where we were going before this. After all that I’ve put her through, I thought it would be nice to take her to a place I know that she’s only ever dreamed of.
“Thank you,” she says, her voice sounding choked as she throws her arms around my waist, careful not to jostle Kerri. “This is the best trip ever.”
I laugh and hug her back, my fingers brushing along the curve of her waist. “We’re just getting started, Hannah. We haven’t even left the airport yet.”
“I can’t believe that you own a house in Italy. Where in Italy are we? How far is your house from the beach?”
“We’re in Calabria right now. I have a house that’s not that far from the coast. Maybe a half hour of driving at most.”
Hannah squeals and takes my hand, lacing her fingers with mine. I smile, my heart beating rapidly against my ribs. I know that this is a big moment for the both of us.
When the CIA informed us that we’d have to testify against Ludwig Mikhailov.
and that we’d be put into the witness protection program, I was worried that we’d all feel isolated at an uncomfortable location. I was able to convince the CIA to let us await the trail at my house in Italy. This was my own place not too far from my family villa, but it was registered to one of my many pseudo names, so it was a safe place as any that the CIA can come up with. When the CIA found out that they didn’t have to pay for our housing expenses, they didn’t need any more convincing.
Hannah was excited when I told her that I'd be taking her to a vacation location, but I’m sure she wasn’t expecting this.
The trial date has not been set, so we could be living here anywhere between a few months to a few years. Hannah is apprehensive at first, but she isn’t the kind of woman to let fear hold her back. Although, I can still see the questions in her eyes when she’s looked at me over the last couple days while we organize our quick and quiet move, I could also see her excitement. I should have known that she would jump at the opportunity to spend quality time as a family, to get to know each other as a couple, and to work on our future together.
We head into the airport and go through customs. Hannah is quiet as she stares at everything in wonder, trying to take it all in. More than once she has Kerri and me pose for photos or take one with her.
Watching her come to life in a place she’s only dreamed of is going to be one of my favorite memories. To see her smile even with everything that had happened.
“The car is waiting for us with our bags already,” I say as we walk through the airport, and I see one of the housekeeping staff outside beside a sleek black car. “Are you ready to have the most relaxing “extended vacation” ever?”
Hannah pushes open the door to the outside, her smile so wide I’m sure her face is going to split in half. “I can’t wait to just get to your house, get Kerri down for a nap, and then kick my feet up and relax.”
“You don’t want a nap too?” I ask as we get in the waiting car. Hannah leans against my side as she closes her eyes and sighs.
“I might nap on the drive there.”
I laugh and shift Kerri in my arms. “You could do that. There’s about an hour until we get to the house.”
As we start the long drive, I know she isn’t going to sleep. The second the car moves, her eyes are open, and she’s got the window rolled down, watching Italy pass by in a blur.
