I’m not going to try to hook up with her tonight. She looks like she just needs a friend right now.

“Well,” she says, drawing out the word as she leans a little closer to me, “My younger sister is getting married. I’ll be staying with her for a few days before the wedding, but I’ve got a hotel room for tonight. I just needed a night before throwing myself into the wedding festivities, you know? I’m really happy for her, but it just reminds me of how alone I am. And then I’m going to be staying in their beautiful home while they go away. It’s all going to be pretty lonely.”

“I understand lonely. I spend most of my days alone. You have to find the little things that make that aloneness great.”

She studies me for a moment. “And what if there is nothing that makes that aloneness great?”

I finish the last of my drink and push the glass away. “Then I think the problem is deeper than just being alone.”

Her lips purse as she looks at me. “And what if I told you that I don’t think I’ll ever not feel lonely?”

I stare at her for a moment before reaching out and cupping her jaw. I use my thumb to swipe away a smudge of red lipstick just below her lip. “Hannah, I may not know you well, but I do know that women like you don’t stay lonely long.”

Her gaze flickers down to my mouth before she looks back up at me. I can see the gears in her head spinning fast.

“Why don’t you walk me to my place like the gentleman you seem to be?”

I grin and stand up, pulling out her chair for her. She laughs as I bow ingratiatingly before holding out my hand and helping her down. Hannah steps down, her nude heels making her legs look a mile long.

She looks at me with that pretty blush still staining her cheeks. There is a heat in her gaze that has me discreetly adjusting myself as we step outside.

“This way,” she says, her heels clicking against the sidewalk as she heads down the street.

As we walk, she tells me about some of her books, though she refuses to tell me if there are pirates in them or not. By the time we’ve walked two blocks, I’m laughing and smiling so much my cheeks hurt.

I can’t remember the last time I had fun like this.

“Do you mind if we stop for a minute?” Hannah asks, leaning against a nearby building. She slips off one of her heels and rubs her foot. “These damn things make my ass look great, but at what cost? Wearing them is like walking on hot coal.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad, but since you said it, I’m not going to disagree with you.” I crouch in front of her and gesture to my back. “Hop on.”

“No way,” she says, disbelief in her tone. “What are people going to think? There’s no way that you can carry me three more blocks.”

“Hannah, I’ll be honest with you. You can either hop on or I’ll toss you over my shoulder. There is no need for you to be walking in heels that hurt your feet.”

I glance over my shoulder to see her gaping at me. After a moment, she puts her heel back on before climbing onto my back.

I wrap my arms around her thighs, shifting her up a little higher before I start walking toward her place.

“Also, Hannah, you shouldn’t give a fuck about what people think. They’re going to have their opinions one way or another. Don’t let it get to you. Besides, I get the honor of carrying an intelligent and beautiful woman home. They’ll all be jealous of me.”

She laughs as her arms loop a little tighter around me. The longer we walk, the more she talks about the music she likes and the books she reads.

Every word she speaks is laced with passion. She is an enticing woman, and when we finally reach the door to her hotel room, I don’t know how I’m going to say goodbye.

“You know,” I say as she slides off my back and moves to stand in front of me. “That’s the best night I’ve had in a long time. Thank you for that. I hope the rest of your night is better.”

She raises an eyebrow, that seductive little smile curling the corner of her mouth. “You’re really going to spend all night talking to me, carrying me here, and not make a move?”

I shrug my hands and tug them in my pockets. “Hannah, I would do that and more, but I’m just happy I got to spend the evening with some good company.”

She laughs and hooks her hand around the back of my neck, pulling me down to her. “You are far too much of a gentleman.”

Her mouth slants against mine as every shred of control I have left disintegrates. I groan as my hands land on her hips. As I push her against the door, she makes a gasp that leaves me aching for her.

My tongue tangles with hers as she scrambles to get the hotel key out. I break away from her long enough to allow her to open the door and lead the way inside. The second the door is closed behind us, she starts sliding my jacket off my shoulders and I work the straps of her dress down her arms.

“Leave the heels on,” I say, my voice a little more than a growl as our clothing hits the floor.
