“I don’t know. But you need to do what I tell you. Don’t stop to think. Just run.”
I nod and bite back the tears that burn my eyes. As Holden gets off me, I take a deep breath. People are still banging against the door and I hear the wood splinter.
“Go.” Holden kisses me quickly before pulling me to my feet and giving me a gentle push in the direction of the basement.
I take off running as the hinges squeal behind me. Holden’s pounding footsteps follow me as I open the door to the basement and take off down the stairs.
The front door crashes down onto the floor as Holden closes the basement door behind us. He takes a moment to lock it before following me down the stairs.
He is all business as he shoves a dresser out of the way and opens a hidden door. Holden keeps it open as I slip inside. I don’t look over my shoulder as I start running again, heading down the long tunnel until I reach a ladder.
He steps in front of me and pulls a gun out of the waistband of his jeans. He looks at me in the dim lighting cast by the sconces that line the tunnel.
“I’m going to go up first and make sure that the coast is clear. Stay at my back and if I tell you to get back inside the tunnel, you do it.”
I nod, trying to calm my racing heart as Holden climbs the ladder. I follow behind him, nearly touching him as we climb together. He surfaces before I do and the sound of gunshots rings out.
My stomach lurches as I follow him and wonder if it’s the right choice. He told me to follow him unless he said otherwise.
As I step out of the tunnel, I know I’ve made the wrong choice.
Bullets rip through the air as I climb into the garage.
“Hannah!” Holden shouts, firing off another couple rounds as I stagger into the wall.
“Hannah!” Holden yells again as he tackles me to the ground. A loud bang follows and I fall to the ground, I hear more gunshots, but for some reason I can’t stand up.
I scream in agony at the unbearable pain coming from my left arm.
My body fails to respond, only my ears function and I hear Holden calling my name. He pulls me behind him and opens the back door just in time for the bullets to hit the car door.
Blood seeps through my fingers as I hold my hand against my arm. The edges of the world become fuzzy as Holden grabs me and shoves me into the back of the SUV.
I sprawl across the seat, pressing harder against the wound.
“It’s going to be okay, Hannah. I’m going to get you to the hospital.” Holden gets in the SUV, makes his way to the driver’s seat, and revs the engine.
“You just have to hold on until we get there. After that, I’m going to go away for a while. I have to make sure that these people can’t hurt you again.”
“You saved by life Holden. Thank you.”
“Thank me! It’s my fault you’re in this mess,” I hear him say.
“Holden, I don’t feel so good,” I say as my vision starts to blur. My head is pounding as I squint and try to get a better look at Holden.
I need to know that he’s okay.
“Hannah, I just need you to be okay. Stay awake until we get to the hospital. Once we get there and the doctors take over, I promise that you’re going to be able to rest.”
“Okay,” I say, my voice raspy. “I think I can.”
But, I don’t know if I’m going to make it.
Holden
The harsh hospital room lighting casts an unforgiving glow across the sterile room as I stand by Hannah’s bedside. I trace the contours of her face with my finger. She’s still asleep.
I recall the memory of seeing her bleed, it haunts me.
