Rachel became aware of his blazing look.

“So you are… Jewish royalty?” She felt her smile return.

“And you are my queen,” Fave said and swept her into his arms. “I will protect you.”

They tumbled back onto the pillows. For the first time in her adult life, Rachel felt that

she had arrived.

CHAPTER45

Aknock. Quietly at first. Then louder. “Fave,” he heard Arnold’s voice.

“Oh no, he’ll see me.” Rachel wriggled herself free and hid under the covers.

Fave wrapped himself around her. Now she was his wife, and he’d never let anybody take her away.

Arnold knocked again and then came in. His eyes widened when he saw Fave in bed and something moving under the blanket. He tilted his head incredulously, smiled his dashing smile, then frowned.

Fave just grinned.

“Ahem, I apologize for the intrusion, but hell is quite positively breaking loose downstairs.”

Rachel held still under the covers.

“Rachel, come on up for air. I know you’re there. Your absence has become known downstairs.”

Fave lifted the blanket and saw her looking up at him. Her naked body clung to his.

Arnold closed the door quietly behind and came closer. “Look, nobody is happier for you two than I am, I promise. But you have to come downstairs.”

Rachel pinched Fave’s stomach.

“Ouch! What was that for?”

She muttered something he could not understand under the covers and kicked him lovingly out of bed.

Naked Fave. Nothing Arnold had not seen before. Fave bent down to retrieve his clothes from the floor and put his breeches on.

“What happened?” Rachel asked as she stuck only her head out from under the covers. Her hair was loose and messy. She looked like she had been thoroughly kissed and all sorts of other things.

Arnold gave Fave an appreciative grin.

Fave pretended to be all gentleman and stifled a smile in response.

“Are you two…?” Arnold looked at Fave. “Did you…?”

Fave nodded. “We made a vow.”

Arnold looked at Rachel and smiled. Fave knew that he was accepting her into their ranks.

“Mazal tov, Cous. And Rachel, of course. My congratulations.” He turned to look at the two hands holding a cover over herself. “Welcome to the family.”

She peeked out again from under the covers and said, “Es iz a kavud.” It is an honor.

“Oykh far mir.” For me, too. Arnold smiled at her.

She beamed. And Fave knew they would get along splendidly.
