“I can’t believe it. Elizabeth is finally divorcing Kevin.”
“So, she wasn’t lying. You do know each other.”
“You actually thought Elizabeth was lying to you?” Britain asked in surprise. “Shame on you, Conner. Granted, we didn’t socialize much since her marriage to Kevin, but we knew each other well in college.”
“That’s what she said, but the thought she might be lying crossed my mind. Look at the timing. I accused her of spying for Warner.”
“She wouldn’t do that. Do you believe her now? And more importantly, are you representing her?”
“Yes, on both counts. I learned something interesting, too.” Conner rubbed the stubble on his chin. “The Warners were friends with the Parkers.”
“I wasn’t aware of that. Conner, listen to me. That’s the connection. You know the old saying ‘Follow the money’? In this case, you need to follow the pregnancy.”
“Are you suggesting Warner slept with Tanya Parker and hired Farmer to kill her?”
“It makes sense. Everyone knows he wants to sit on the bench eventually. Can you imagine how the discovery of his affair with Tanya Parker and his fathering an illegitimate child would put his ambition at risk? You know these things always come to light. Put William on it.”
“Will do.”
“Conner.” She said his name softly, which caused his heart to skip a beat.
If only…
“Yes, Brit?”
“I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I fell in love with Christian first.”
“I know. Truthfully, I should have backed off as soon as you told me who fathered your baby.”
“I hope you meet someone special. Someone you’ll love and who will love you in return.”
“Yeah. One can hope. Good night, Britain.”
Conner stripped and settled in his lonely bed. It’d been one helluva day. A niggle of concern for Elizabeth rose in him, and something else, too. Something he absolutely shouldn’t be feeling for a client. Damn. She looked good in black jeans with curves in all the right places. And those gray eyes. Utterly bewitching. Sighing and cursing himself for being such a colossal fool, Conner pulled up Elizabeth’s number from his contacts list and hit the CALL button.
“Conner, hi,” she greeted him in a low voice.
“Are you okay, Elizabeth?” Worry colored his tone. If what Britain suggested was true, if Kevin impregnated Tanya Parker and killed her, he may be desperate to keep his wife from finding out.
“Yes, I’m fine. Kevin isn’t home.”
“Great. Make sure you note the time he comes home if you can.”
“I will.” Elizabeth paused. “Thanks for calling, Conner.”
“You’re welcome. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“All right.”
Elizabeth awoke thefollowing morning when she heard Kevin choosing his wardrobe in the walk-in closet. She rose from the bed and joined him, wrapping her arms around his narrow waist to keep him from becoming suspicious of her. She needed Kevin to believe she was clueless about his real nature and dangerous inclinations.
“Good morning, Kevin. I didn’t hear you come home last night.” She pressed a kiss to his neck, trying not to shiver with revulsion.
He disengaged himself and slipped into a red and white striped shirt. “You were out like a light, Lizzie.”
“What time did you finally come in?” she asked as she helped him with his matching red tie.
“Oh, around midnight. I slept in the guest room after I checked on you. How are you feeling today?” He reached for a shoe box.
