“Are you through?” Elizabeth crossed her arms.
“Yes, I am. As soon as your divorce is final, I’ll send you my bill.”
“Well, I’m not through withyou. I don’t have any feelings left for Kevin, and I certainly wasn’t crying over him. I was crying from sheer joy.”
“Joy? Over what?”
“Over you. Over this.” Elizabeth grabbed his lapels and pulled him against her. She kissed him greedily, deeply, sucking on his bottom lip, plunging her tongue into his mouth again and again.
His hard erection pressed into her, and she reached between them to grab the bulge in his pants. “I love the way you feel, Conner,” she murmured in his ear, circling it with her tongue. “I want you. When this is over, I want you. In me. On me. Any way you want.” Her brazenness astounded her. She’d never said anything remotely like that to another man. Ever.
Her bold invitation and her soft caresses caused Conner to groan low in his throat. He fumbled with the lock, and they tumbled through the front door. Lifting her bottom, he encouraged her to wrap her legs around him as his mouth slanted across hers. Knowing there wouldn’t be a consummation of their passion tonight only increased the sweetness of their anticipation. He kissed her until they were both breathless.
“I’m sorry,” Conner panted. “I thought—”
Elizabeth cut him off with a hard kiss. “I know what you thought. You were wrong.”
He grinned and brushed her hair out of her eyes. “And you weren’t afraid to tell me.”
“I took pleasure in it.”
“Oh? Because I take pleasure in this.”
Conner claimed her mouth again in a powerful, sexy kiss while cupping her bottom and pressing sinfully against her. When he finally lifted his head, he muttered, “You’re so damn hard to resist, Elizabeth.”
“So are you.”
“Will you be all right alone tonight?”
“Yes. Kevin doesn’t have any idea where I am. And Surfer is keeping an eye on us.”
“I don’t like the fact you’re stranded here without your car, though.”
“Then stay. Sleep in one of the guest bedrooms.”
“You should probably lock your bedroom door.” He gazed meaningfully at her body.
“So should you,” she countered with a mischievous smile.
Conner chuckled as he cupped her face and kissed her hard and long. “Good night, Elizabeth. Sleep well.”
“You, too.” With reluctance, she turned away from him and headed toward the master bedroom.
Kevin wasn’t homewhen Elizabeth went to pick up her car on Sunday. Conner helped her pack the rest of her clothes and personal possessions she wanted to keep. There wasn’t much. Nothing in the house held any sentimental value for her. It was filled with cold, meaningless objects. Every piece of jewelry Kevin gave her she left behind, along with her wedding rings, which she set on top of his laptop in the study. Conner didn’t think it was a wise gesture, but Elizabeth shrugged. She wanted to send Kevin a message that she knewallof his dirty secrets.
Afterward, Elizabeth returned to the cottage while Conner went to his apartment to shower and change his clothes. Later, they met to hammer out the details of Elizabeth’s divorce. She didn’t want anything, but Conner wouldn’t allow her to leave the marriage without her fair share of their assets. In fact, he intended to ask for everything the couple owned on his client’s behalf. Elizabeth argued against using such an aggressive tactic, but in the end, she relented, bowing to Conner’s experience and knowledge. Besides, no matter what, Kevin wouldn’t accept any settlement Conner offered. They were bound to go to court.
On Monday morning, Elizabeth arrived early at her business and waited for Lexi. Firing her assistant would leave her shorthanded at the beginning of the wedding season, but she didn’t have a choice. She couldn’t trust Lexi anymore, and without trust, their personal and work relationship was over. To take her mind off the unpleasantness ahead, Elizabeth started checking her emails, discarding those she didn’t need to keep and answering others that required a response. At nine o’clock, Lexi entered the shop and settled behind her desk. Elizabeth took a deep breath, picked up an envelope, and joined her assistant.
“You’re here early,” Lexi commented as she booted up her laptop. “The mayor’s birthday party went well, don’t you think? Nothing but compliments.”
Lexi enjoyed hobnobbing with Denver’s rich and influential citizens. She probably expected to be one of them someday. She would have to set her sights on another wealthy man because Kevin Warner was headed to prison for murder.
“I’m glad you think so, Lexi, because it was your last event as my assistant. You’re fired,” Elizabeth announced.
Lexi turned pale and rose to her feet. “Why? What did I do?”
“You know what you did. You betrayed me. After everything I’ve done for you, you did the worst thing you could possibly do. You slept with my husband.”
