Christian approached Conner and handed him a drink. “I know what you’re thinking, Con-Man.”
“Oh, yeah? What’s that?”
“That you’d like to beat Kevin Warner within an inch of his life.”
“Wouldn’t you?”
“Nothing would give me greater pleasure.”
“Well, Logan Sherwood feels the same way about you, Chris. He’s been thinking about laying you out cold. Haven’t you noticed him glaring at you all evening? Why did you bring Julissa?”
Christian grimaced. “I didn’t. She presented herself as my fiancée. You know I never asked that woman to marry me. I’m willing to go along with it because I’m desperate to get my son away from her. But when Britain hears this, it’s one more nail in my coffin.”
Conner swallowed his guilt. Chris still had no idea Britain had moved to California to get away from him and Julissa. What a mess. At the moment, though, he had his own to handle.
The big, intimidatingdetective who visited her the previous evening spoke into the earpiece she wore, and Lexi, per his instructions, followed Alexa Wainwright through the ballroom to the nearest ladies’ room. While she waited for the tall, slender blonde to come out of a stall, she pretended to be checking her phone for messages. Alexa emerged and washed her hands. Meeting Lexi’s hateful glare, she smiled.
“Lexi.”
“So, you know who I am.”
“Of course.” Her smile turned into a smirk.
“Then you know Kevin’s affair with you was supposed to be a smokescreen in case Elizabeth got suspicious. You don’t have anything to lose, but I do. She would fire me in a heartbeat.” She paused. “You and he looked really cozy on the dance floor. Everyone noticed, even Elizabeth. What’s going on, Alexa?”
“Do I need to spell it out for you?”
“Please.” Lexi held her gaze.
“Look, you and Elizabeth are too sweet for Kevin. He’s ambitious, both in and out of bed. I have what he needs to keep him satisfied. A cold heart and a hot body.”
“I kept him satisfied in bed,” Lexi defended herself with an indignant edge in her voice.
“For a time. But he’s moved on from both you and his wife.” Alexa repaired her lipstick.
Tears burned in Lexi’s eyes. “So, it’s true? You’re sleeping with Kevin?”
“Haven’t I already made that abundantly clear?” Alexa parried.
“I need to hear you say it.” Her lower lip quivered.
“If you insist. I’m sleeping with Kevin. Feel better?”
Hearing the words was a slap in the face. Lexi sucked in her breath. She felt sick to her stomach. Suspecting she’d been played for a fool was one thing, but having it confirmed was quite another. Guilt washed over her for mocking Elizabeth behind her back after she’d done so much for Lexi. Now she understood how horrible it felt to be cheated on. Kevin used her and set her aside in favor of his sexier partner. He might even intend for Alexa to take the fall if he succeeded in murdering his wife. Well, Lexi had dodged a bullet with that one.
She swiped at a tear rolling down her cheek. “Thanks for being honest with me. I deserved to know the truth.” Lexi shook her head. “Once a cheater, always a cheater. Eventually, Kevin will cheat on you, too. I’m sure there was someone else in between you and me. He never said who it was, but he had this look of immense satisfaction once when I asked him if he was cheating on me.”
Alexa offered an indifferent shrug. “I’m not looking for a loyal lapdog. I’ll cheat on him, too, when the mood strikes me. We’re a perfect match.”
Lexi swallowed the sickness that continued to engulf her and said in a rush, “Alexa, there’s something—”
She suddenly broke off when Rawson hissed in her ear, “Shut your mouthnowor no deal.”
“Never mind,” she muttered. “You’re certainly smarter than I am. Enjoy the rest of the evening.”
Lexi left the ladies’ room and headed to the second floor to meet with Detective Stone and D.A. Hart Kingston in one of the rooms. She removed the earpiece and asked, “Did you get what you needed?”
Rawson nodded. “Yes. Good work, Lexi.”
