I had witnessed the things that the soldiers were willing to do if Padrino blinked hard enough. I didn’t want that for him.
“I’m getting sleepy, Judah. I’m going to take it in for the night.” I gave a half-truth. It was a little after two a.m., and we had spent all this time talking and laughing. But the noise in the hallway jarred me from my fairytale.
There is no way that my godfather would turn a blind eye. Judah had a family back home that called him every day and asked about his safety. I couldn’t jeopardize that.
“Bet,” he said as he slid off the edge of the bed and walked toward the door. I stopped him, ran over to the door, and made sure that the coast was clear before he walked out of it.
He looked at me like I was doing too much, but I wanted to be careful. Maybe he was so calm because he knew the other side of himself that he had. But he was in Bolivia, stuck in this house and in the country. It would be a war that he would start but wouldn’t win.
“Goodnight, Judah,” I said as I held the door open wider and he walked out.
He turned to me and tilted my chin toward him. “Same time tomorrow, Ma.”
I smiled but didn’t agree. After I locked the door, I lay back in my bed and sighed. Judah was really irresistible. I kept telling myself that it was harmless company, but the one thing you could never do was lie to yourself. I knew that the more I let him into the room, the deeper I was letting him into me.
CHAPTER 3
Judah
Ivy: Same time tonight, I’ll leave the door unlocked.
The message came through and made me smile. Then my smile instantly faded when I saw Alexis calling. She had been blowing me up, and I hadn’t given her ass a second thought since I had seen Ivy. When I was in the room with Ivy, I didn’t even take my phone; I left that shit in the guest room that I had been sleeping in. It was just the two of us, without any distractions, and I liked that. Every night I went into her room, it was always some weird ass fun fact that she wanted me to know, and it was cool to see her in her element as a scientist. She just wasn’t a pretty face, and that made her finer.
I went to the bathroom and took a shower, and the thoughts of her made my dick brick up underneath the showerhead. I was trying to be a friend, but I felt like my attraction to her was apparent. I had bitches that I saw every other day, and I didn’t think twice about them. But Ivy consumed my thoughts all day. I don’t know what it is; it could be that I’m used to getting what I want. And the fact that I couldn’t have Ivy made me want to have her more.
I continued to shower, dick harder than a brick of gold, as I washed my body. Throwing the towel around me, I was stillbricked up. I sat on the edge of the bed and tried to get myself in check. No woman had ever had this effect on me. It was fifteen minutes past the time that I was supposed to go into the room when my dick finally started cooperating.
I pushed open the door and locked it behind me.
She had one leg on the bed, putting on lotion. She was dressed in a white pajama short set with cherries on them. When I walked in, she smiled, showing that one dimple.
“I didn’t think you were coming.”
“Uh, my shower ran over,” I said as I tried to focus on everything but her. I could feel that muhfucka starting to rise again, and if it did, I was going to scare Shorty.
“Did you know that- why are you laughing?”
I cut her off mid-sentence, shaking my head.
“Cause, every night you got some shit to tell me,” I chuckled because I knew she would have some nerdy ass shit to say.
She laughed and rolled her eyes. “And I’m going to tell you anyway. Did you know that the air outside smells different right now because the flood washed all the dust and pollen out of the atmosphere? That fresh, earthly scent is called petrichor.”
“Nah, I didn’t know that, Shorty. I’ll remember the smell the next time I’m fighting for my life in a flash flood.” I said as she screamed and threw the lotion bottle at me.
I ducked before I went deeper into the room and sat on the bed.
“What are we watching tonight?” I asked. This shit was different; the only screens I watched on a daily basis were the security systems for Kingsway, our other properties, and our homes. Before I got here, I can’t remember the last time I watched anything on TV. It felt good to just be normal and not have to be pulled in every different direction. Being in Bolivia gave me the vacation that I hadn’t had since I was probably seventeen years old.
“I was thinking we could watch this dating show that my cousin told me about,” she said as she pulled up the app and clicked on it.
“Cool,” I grabbed my blanket and lay across the bed.
We made conversation throughout the show; it was routine, the show was just the background noise for us. She had opened up to me a lot over the last two weeks, and every day that I got closer to the states, I regretted it.
She was sitting on the bed next to me with her knees to her chest and her arms locked around them. Then she took her hair out of the bun and let it frame her face. She had always worn it up and pulled it out of her face, but now it fell around her shoulders.
“Why are you staring at me, Judah?” she questioned.
